2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships
Build-Your-Own-Team Contests
Note: T&FN has been contacted by several schools which think our contest is in violation of NCAA rules regarding "usage of student-athletes for commercial ventures." While we are eager to respect the wishes of these schools--and would never do anything to endanger an athlete's eligibility--we're not convinced that what we are doing is wrong. T&FN immediately contacted the NCAA's national office and is awaiting its ruling. We will leave the contest up pending that ruling.
So you wanna be a XC-management guru? If you didn't win (or even play) last time, here's your chance.
4 Prizes!
There will be 4 prizes (at least) available in this contest. The
winner of the best men's score gets a 2-year subscription to T&FN.
So does the winner of the women's best score. The runner-up in
each of those two competitions will get a 1-year subscription.
How To Enter
At the bottom of this page you'll find links to building your
teams, based on the 200-odd leading entries we have programmed
in (no write-ins are possible). After you click through, you'll
need to choose a 10-person team (for each sex, if you're playing
both sides).
Our computer will score your first 8 finishers, standard cross
country style. So if you're good enough to pick the first 8, your
score will be a perfect 36. In the unlikely instance that you
have a runner who finishes in a shared position, they’ll
have another half-point added. i.e., two tied for 1st share 3
points, so each is worth 1.5.
Breaking Ties
Many contest entrants are likely to come up with the same scores. The tie-breaking procedure--only for places where prizes are concerned--goes as follows. If two potential prize-winners have the same score after the original 8 placers, we'll then add 9th to the mix, and if necessary 10th place. If a tie remains after all 10 placers, we'll simply award the prizes to everyone at that score.
Enjoy!
