Women's Long Jump Results

Final

The dream is still alive! After two rounds of the women's long jump Marion Jones was in serious trouble after a pair of fouls. With three women over 22-feet already and Jackie Joyner-Kersee in the field, she was definitely going to have to pull one out. Jumpig last in the order, pull it she did, coming through with a 22-1 3/4 on her third attempt to move into 4th behind the 22-5 1/4 jumps of Dawn Burrell and surprising Meosha Hubbard and the 22-3 3/4 for Shana Williams. The comebacking JJK was 5th at 21-10 3/4.

The improvements were far from through, however. In round 4 Burrell improved to 22-10 and Williams to 22-5. Jones moved into 3rd with a 22-7.

In the 5th stanza Jones surged into the lead with a 23-1/2 (7.02) jump (wind a legal 1.9). Williams also improved, but her 22-6 1/2 didn't up her position.

The final round was anticlimactic, only Burrell improving, but her 22-10 1/2 as the final jumper of the compeition left her 2 inches behind. Two down, 1 to go for Marion. JJK ended up 6th, never improving again.

Prelims

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, jumping last in the first flight, jumped 20-73/4 (6.29). Not bad for her first jump in two years.

Her second jump was a "pull-out" and no improvement.

On a parallel runway, in the second flight (which is one full round behind) Marion Jones chopped badly on her first jump, but got out to 21-63/4 (6.57) to just miss the auto qualifying standard.

JJK got a big roar out of the crowd with her best jump of the day on her third attempt, stretching out to 21-3/4 (6.42). She is all but guaranteed a spot in the final, creating an exciting match up with Marion' Trials odyssey. She finishes 3rd in group 1 behind Sawyer and Miller.
