Final
Kim Fitchen opened up an
early lead with a 75.16 first lap. The pack caught her near the kilo,
reached in 3:14.3, with Fitchen still leading.
Peters leads at 1200m, the
pack all together, but strung out nicely. Worries about overcrowded
fields seem unfounded.
5:10.42 at 1600m with Natalie
Nalepa leading, followed by Mosqueda, Peters, Russell and Lauck.
6:27.10 for 2K, wth Nalepa
enjoying a 5m lead. Drossin is back in about 10th.
Rhines, Beaney and Hickman
also up in the pack approaching 6 laps. The pack is running failry even
pace, 77's or so.

at 3k and 10:19.52 at 3200. Drossing seems to be struggling a bit.

in contention. Erica Palmer is trying to get up into the lead pack after
9 laps.

who took over the lead from Nalepa, with Rhines going right with her.
Drossin begins to move up.
14:13.31 for Peters at 11
laps. Steely has dropped off the lead group. Drossin is gradually applying
pressure.
Halfway reached in 16:09.61
at halfway, with Fitchen leading. 32:30 is the Olympic A Standard.
So, it's Fitchen, Rhines,
Lauck, Peters, Russell, Nalepa and Drossin at 5400.
76.7 for the 14th lap. Still
very even running. Fitchen is a late bloomer in running, to say the
least.
FItchen, 'Rhines, Lauch,
Peters, HIckman, with Fitchen leading at 6K in 19:22.38. Group of 9
still left. Russell, Mosqueda and Drossin still up there.
20:40.2 at 6400. Beaney is still up there. "She might make the
team," says Sieg Lindstrom.
At 6800 Mosqueda has dropped
off. A group of 8 left at 7K, reached in 22:35.80, lead by Fitchen,
Rhines, Lauch Peters, Hickman, Drossin, Beaney and Russell.

It's all single file. EIght people left in a women's 10K final with
6 laps to go is exciting. 75% of the fans are still here.
78 second lap. they're lapping
runners. Rhines moving up to first. Followed by Peters. Fitchen drops
to 4th then 5th. Fitchen struggling. This is the move of the race. Beaney
and Lauck are responding. Mosqueda somehow makes it back to the pack.
Drossin moves up to challenge
Rhines as they went through 8K in 25:55.2
Amazingly, Mosqueda moves
to the lead 8200m.
She leads with Peters then
taking the lead with 4 to go. They ran a 77.9, as Drossing goes to the
lead. Lauch and Peters go with them. Hickman to fifth. Peters is out
the backdoor. Drossin. Lauck, Rhines, Hickman and Peters with 3 to go.
28:23.29 with 3 to go. Hickman is trying to catch her.
9K in 28:57.1. They're on
to a fast time. Could go under 32.
Drossin full of run. The
race for third is Lauck and Rhines. Peters in fifth not too far back.
Hickman a strong 2nd.
67.7 the 3rd to last lap.
Rhines challenges, but Lauck holds her off for third. Drossin is a lock
for the win. With one lap to go, Drossin has a 40m lead. Hickman looks
strong. Rhines and Lauck jockeying. Hickman losing some ground. Rhines
goes with 230 to go. Lauck can't immediately respond. They're catching
Hickman. Drossin is a clear winner in 31:01.05. Rhines sprints hard
past Hickman. Lauck is closing on Hickman, but she maintains, and holds
on for 3rd.

What a race! The battle for
3rd ends a great first day. Drossin, who was dropped last year at nationals
