Women's 100 Meter Results

Final

To nobody's surprise, Marion Jones owned the women's 100 final. Already in control by the 20-meter mark, she simply motored away for a win of more than 6 feet. Her time of 10.88 was extraordinary considering the 1.0 meter/second (about 2.5mph) headwind. People simply aren't supposed to be able to run that fast with a wind in their face. But Marion's not ordinary people.

Her margin of victory was a hefty 0.17 seconds as Inger Miller continued her resurgence with an 11.05 clocking.

Then things started to get interesting. Really interesting as the bulk of the field threw itself across the line almost en masse. Stanford alum Chryste Gaines, out all of '99 after running into a camerman during the indoor season, completed a heartwarming comeback with an 11.13 that gave her the third spot on the team, just ahead of the 11.14s for Torri Edwards and Gail Devers. It's the neophyte Edwards who should get the fourth relay spot as she edged her cross-LA rival by a mere 0.003 seconds.

Texans Nanceen Perry (11.18) and Carlette Guidry (11.22) trailed, and Passion Richardson (11.32) was never really in it.

Women's 100 Semis

Heat 1: Nice and hot, but a little brezzier than yesterday. Marion Jones and Angela Williams were out best. Jones started to gain some daylight at 50m as Williams faded and Edwards and Gaines battled for second. Jones looked really relaxe, not easing up much to finish in 10.93 into a -0.4 wind (worth a 10.90 according to the Big Green Book tables). Edwards nipped Gaines for ssecond 11.14-11.15, as Guidry was the 4th qualifier in 10.20.

Heat 2: Devers got her normal quick start, but Miller was out well too. They were even until about 50m until Miller started to pull away. Perry came on strong to almost nip Perry. Miller's 11.10 winning time into a 1.0 wind is worth a 11.03. Devers and Perry were both timedn 11.25 as Richardson got into the final with a slowish 11.46.

Women's 100 Heats
Heat 1: In almost perfect sprinting conditions (except for the slight headwind of -0.2), Marion Jones ran a very relaxed 10.92 to win the first heat. Marion got out even with the rest of the field, but quickly pulled away, not easing up too much before the line. Passion Richardson was the best of the rest in 2nd with 11.29.

Heat 2: There was one false start. Running into a slight headwind of -0.4, Chryste Gaines and Nanceen Perry were even through 60 meters, at which point Gaines pulled away 11.13-11.20. Indoor 60 champ Tonya Carter of Florida State was the third automatic qualifier in 11.34.

Heat 3: There was one false start charged to Torri Edwards in lane 7. Gail Devers, who has been hurdling well all season but who has not done much in the sprinting department, got a blazing start and rode a 1.3 tailwind to an impressive 10.99. Carlette Guidry was also out well and looked good running 11.03. Torri Edwards closed very strongly to grap the third auto qualifying spot in 11.06.

Heat 4: False start charged to Inger Miller. There was an initial break beforehand, where no false start was charged, but it looked like Miller jumped that time too. Miller, who looked like she was running with something to prove. She got out welll and drove through the tape, stopping the clock at 11.04, aided by a 1.7 tailwind. Angela Williams looked sluggish, but could just be saving energy, finishing second.

Comparing the winning heat times adjusted according to wind (according to the wind-adjustments in Track & Field News' Little Green Book):

Marion Jones 10.91.
Chryste Gaines 11.10
Gail Devers 11.07
Inger Milles 11.14.
