Prelims
In the first shocking result
of the Trials, pole vault AR holder Jeff Hartwig missed all three attempts
at his opening height in the qualifying round and is out.
Hartwig stalled out on his
trio of shots at 18-2 1/2, his opening height. The dejected Arkansan
felt his undoing resulted when his eyes couldn't adjust to finding the
box and he couldn't adapt his run-up.
"I don't know what to feel just yet," said Hartwig shortly
after walking off the track with friend and compatriot Nick Hysong at
his side. Still, Hartwig tried to smile and explain to reporters what
happened.
"If anything might have hurt me at the Trials, I thought it might
be my legs, which felt tried lately," said Hartwig. "But my
vision couldn't find the box properly and it's absolutely critical that
your radar is keyed into the box precisely. Then you can transfer your
speed into the jump to your best advantage.
"So you hold your eyes open so you can really pick up that box
good. But that dried out my contacts and I just coulden't adjust my
sight. The same thing happened to me indoors and I actually popped out
a contact at indoor nationals, my eyes were so dry."
Hartwig added he has a full slate of meets scheduled in Europe for the
post-Trials period, "but now I may have to reassess that. I do
plan to have eye surgery in the off-season, so I don't have to rrely
on contacts, But it's just a matter of moving on from here."
Hysong looked stone-faced on the interview dais and admitted, "I
nearly broke into tears when Jeff missed his third attempt. Not only
is he a great jumper, but he is one of my closest friends. If I am lucky
enough to make the team, it's just not going to feel right not having
Jeff on the Olympic squad too."
