Men's Long Jump Results
Final
With the end of the Carl
Lewis/Mike Powell era, distances predictably fell off, with the winning
distance being the shortest since Larry Myricks won in the boycott year
of 1980.
On a cool and windy night,
perhaps even the legendary duo of Carl and Mike would have had trouble
putting up a really big mark, as only 2 of the 14 finalists were able
to improve after the first three jumps.
Robert Howard took the early
lead at 26-5 3/4 (8.07), then Walter Davis secured his seat on the flight
to Sydney with a 26-7 1/4 (8.11) jump on his first try. Halfway through
the second round, Howard's former Arkansas teammate, Melvin Lister,
unleashed the night's only 27-footer, 27-3 3/4 (8.32), to move into
the lead. The Lister-Davis-Howard trio would hold down the team spots
through rounds 3 and 4.
Nobody improved in round
4. In the middle of the fifth stanza, Dwight Phillips moved from 5th
into 2nd with a 26-8 1/2 (8.14) pop. The only other improvement in the
competition also came in the fifth round, a 26-3 1/2 by Erick Walder,
not enough to get onto the team.
Premeet favorite Savanté
Stringfellow came nowhere near his NCAA-winning form, ending up 5th
at 26-4 1/2 (8.04), a place ahead of Walder. Nine of the 21 jumps in
the final three rounds were fouls.
