Men's 100 Meter Results

Final

After a false start by Tim Montgomery and one request for a callup, the field was away amazingly evenly. As in his semi, it didn't take Jon Drummond long to establish himself as the leader. Maurice Greene is used to running down his training mate, however, and the World Record holder was clearly in control by the race's halfway point. He moved away with relative ease, appearing to let up slightly as he crossed the line in 10.01, fingers waving and tongue wagging, as is his wont. Given the 1.7 meter/second (almost 4mph) headwind, the 10.01 was worth something on the order of 9.91, according to T&FN's wind conversion chart.

Behind Greene, Drummond was having a battle royal with yet another member of the Hudson-Smith training group, Curtis Johnson. Johnson closed with a rush and the camera showed times of 10.07 for both that had to be read to 1000ths before Johnson was given the nod by 0.004.

Brian Lewis (10.09) held down the No. 3 position for much of the race but he couldn't withstand Johnson's late-race burst. Then came Kenny Brokenburr (10.14), with a blanket covering the last three, Tim Montgomery (10.18), Bernard Williams (10.19) and Dennis Mitchell (10.20).

Men's 100 Semis

Semi 1: Problems with getting away. First a false start called on Brian Lewis; Tim Montgomery asks for a standup. On the next try, Lewis looks to react best, but Jon Drummond quickly asserts himself with amazing early-race pickup. Lewis closes well, but Drummond has an eased-up 10.05-10.15 win (wind -1.5). Adjusting for the wind, Drummond's time is worth 9.96. The two other qualifiers for the final are Curtis Johnson and Tim Montgomery.

Semi 2: False start called on Kenny Brokenburr. World Record holder Maurice Greene has a prototypical start for him, coming out in the middle of the pack and driving the first 20m with his head down. Once his head comes up and he's in full stride it's no contest. Brokenburr surprises on the outside, pulling away from the rest of the field in the last 20m. Greene's 10.06 into an 0.6 is worth 10.03. Joining Greene and Brokenburr (10.13) in the final will be Dennis Mitchell (10.19) and Bernard Williams (10.19).

Men's 100 heats

Heat 1: The Mean Green Machine, Dennis Mitchell, broke well in lane one. He appeared to have the race well under control at the halfway point, but over in lane 5, Coby Miller surged at about 60m, making up a meter-plus deficit as the race wound down. Another meter and he woul dhave been the winner; as it was, Mitchell was the photofinish winner as each clocked 10.11 (wind -0.7).

Heat 2: After one false start the field was away well, with Curtis Johnson getting the best start. He was never headed, although Bernard Williams made a good move in the last half the race to take 2nd, 10.10-10.17 (wind -0.8).

Heat 3: Probably the toughest draw of the four heats. Continuing the string of fast starts, Jon Drummond got out too fast on his first try and was cited for a false start. On the second go-round, Kenny Brokenburr broke early. Unfazed by his falsie, Drummond exploded out on the next try and led all the way. Expectedly, Mike Marsh made a very strong move and just nipped Drummond at the line as both ran 10.12 (wind -0.6). Shomari Wilson pulled up at about the 50m mark.

Heat 4: World Record holder Maurice Greene had a so-so start and only average pickup, being part of the pack for the first 20m. But then, oh my! He simply ran away from the field, recording a 9.93 (wind 0.3) despite shutting down in the last 15-20m. He wasn't running at all at the finish as he raised his fingers in his signature wag.

Heat 5: Last year's nationals runner-up, Brian Lewis broke clear from the pack about the halfway point and was clearly the master of the field as he ran 10.03 (wind 0.4). John Capel edged Tim Montgomery for 2nd as both ran 10.12s.

Applying the T&FN wind-adjustment chart to the five races, it's clear there's Mo and then there's the mortals. Greene's time adjusts to 9.95, while the other three (Lewis 10.05, Curtis Johnson 10.06, Dennis Mitchell 10.07, Mike Marsh 10.09) were closely bunched about a 10th behind.
