10. Reedus ThurmondWorld champion Washington showed last year in winning in Seville that he can produce the big-big throw in the clutch. The '96 Olympian led Saturday's qualifying at 219-7, more than a yard farther than Godina (216-1).
The real knot in the qualifying round came behind Godina: Reynolds (207-8), Bloom (207-0) and Setliff (206-3) within 17 inches. Setliff, Godina and Bloom are fiery competitors (remember Bloom in the shot?) and they easily could finish in any order.
But this is Setliff's one shot at the team and Godina finished 4th in the shot, so the disc remains as his last shot, too. Bloom, on the shot squad, won't concede a thing. So everyone will have to be at his best to stave off the others. With four prime contenders for three team spots, the competition will be fierce.
Should any of the leading quartet commit the slightest slip, however, Reynolds could leapfrog into the top three. Career-best throws would be needed by Brown and White to approach those ahead of them.
