Men's Pole Vault Preview
Olympic champion Nick Hysong
and U.S. teammate Tim Mack were among the group of a dozen who cleared
18-8.25 to advance to Thursday's final. American Russ Buller made 18-4.5
but didn't move on. National champion Lawrence Johnson was a pre-meet
withdrawl due to a stress fracture in a leg.
Germany led the way as its
trio of Danny Ecker, Michael Stolle and Richard Spiegelburg all got
through Tuesday's rain-soaked qualifying. Australia got through its
Russian-born duo of Dmitriy Markov and Viktor Chistiakov. Markov looked
especially strong, as he did late in the first half of the European
circuit prior to Edmonton when he cleared an Aussie record 19-6.25.
Ecker is the overall season
leader with his indoor 19-8.25, while Stolle placed 4th in the Olympics
and Markov tied for 5th in Sydney. Hysong hasn't appeared this season
to be quite at his heights of '00, but he proved his competitive mettle
in Sydney and had several good performances as this summer's European
circuit built up toward the Worlds.
Ecker, Markov and Stolle
should provide Hysong with plenty of competition for the title. Another
to keep in mind is Israel's Aleksander Averbukh, '99 bronze medalist
who has cleared a career-best 19-4.25 this season.
Making heights on first try
is a key to any title-meet competition, but could be especially so If
the cooler weather forecast for Thursday shows up. /Jon Hendershott/
