Women's Heptathlon
Heading into the final event,
DeDee Nathan only needed to stay with 13 seconds of Shelia Burrell in
the 800 to hold onto victory. She was much closer than that, running
2:19.77 to Burrell's 2:16.58, giving the Indiana Invader her second
straight natonal title with a 6174w total. Burrell was second with 6051w.
Arkansas's Gi-Gi Miller had
a career meet, finishing in 3rd with a 5925 total. Tracye Lawyer ran
a terrible 800 (2:31.20), while Miller's 2:16.24 carried her to third.
The World Champs qualifying
standard is 6120. Burrell has that standard from last yeat, but Miller
does not. Kelly Blair-LaBounty, not competing this year, is the only
other American with the standard, so look for Miller, obviously tired
from a long collegiate season, to compete again in a quest for that
standard.
