Women's 400
Final
Olympic Trials winner LaTasha
Colander-Richardson grabbed the lead in the second turn to win her second
national title in her, yes, second season in the 400. Her 50.79 was
nearly a second slower than last year's Trials mark (49.87), but it
effectively dispatched Trials runner-up Michelle Collins (51.00) and
Trials 4th-placer Monique Hennagan (51.20).
Hennagan and Colander-Richardson
were college teammates at North Carolina, and Collins and Colander-Richardson
are training partners coached by Marion Jones's coach, Trevor Graham.
Fourth was NCAA 2nd-placer
Demetria Washington of South Carolina (51.70). Fifth-placer Suziann
Reid started well but faded in the final 200.
While the Hayward Field Track,
the surface of which was recently redone, seems quick enough for most
events, but this final, like that of the NCAA, was notable for slowish
times.
