Women's 3000 Steeplechase
Final
Elizabeth Jackson attempted
to repeat her NCAA victory on the Hayward Field Track, but after a driving
kick with Lisa Nye over the second-to-last lap, the pair launched into
a full-tilt battle on the last lap and Nye kicked past in the homestretch
to take the national title and the American Record from Jackson.
The Olympic Trials runner-up's
9:49.41 cut 0.32 from the AR Jackson set at the NCAA.
The race failed to surpass
the collegiate clash for depth, as Jackson (9:49.94) and Arizona State's
Kelly MacDonald (9:55.49) were the only others under 10:00. The NCAA
race saw 6 break that barrier.
Heats
The women's steeple may have
had 44 contestants, but in each of the 3 heats the fields thinned quickly.
Heat 1 produced the fastest time with Rebecca Bennion (10:14.34) of
perennial steeplechase power Weber State leading wire-to-wire. Heat
2 was won by Kelly MacDonald of Arizona State in 10:16.48. The final
heat was considerably slower than the first two. Katie Sabino of North
Carolina State won in 10:30.01. Other notable qualifiers include Elizabeth
Jackson (10:30.24) , Lisa Nye (10:18.95), Nan Evans (10:17.06), and
Kara Ormond (10:30.09).
