Women's 1500
Final
Yet another chapter was written
in the tale of the rivalry between Regina Jacobs and Suzy Favor Hamilton.
As at the 2000 Olympic Trials, Jacobs prevailed, this time 4:06.12-4:06.61.
After the Indiana Invaders'
Priscilla Hein set the pace for most of the race (67.1, 2:16.1) with
Favor Hamilton running 2nd and Jacobs 4th, Favor Hamilton took the lead
on the homestretch of the third lap, reaching 200 to go in 3:36.8.
But Jacobs was two steps
behind, and sprinted past in the curve to take the lead heading onto
the last straight. The 37-year-old Jacobs covered her final 200 in 29.3
to Favor Hamilton's 29.9.
Sarah Schwald most likely
regards her comeback season as a success. She placed 3rd (4:08.57) ahead
of NCAA champ Mary Jayne Harrelson (4:10.51).
Heats
Heat 1
The pace crawled, with Collette Liss sometimes the defacto pacemaker.
Things began to wind up with a lap to go. Suzy Favor Hamilton, who looked
impressive 4 weeks ago at Pre, closed with a 62 last lap to win by over
a second over LIss 4:23.51-4:24.84.
Heat 2
The second heat was a bit faster, with Schwald and Priscilla Hein up
front. Regina Jacobs, looking just to qualify, let the leaders go with
400 to go and was content just to automatically qualify in 4th (4:18.54)
behind Schwald (4:18.34) and Best 4:18.40.
