WOMEN'S 100 HURDLE
FINAL
Jenny Adams, already the
long jump winner, had made a bold statement in the heats with a windy
12.61, a mark that made her the No. 3 American ever under all conditions.
She was up against the No. 1 American, however, and today wasn't the
day that Gail Devers was about to give up her lofty status.
Devers was out quickly and
was never headed. The time was a relatively slow 12.91, but considering
that the runners were fighting a stiff 2.8mps wind (more than 5mph)
and there was a light rain, the time was rather impressive.
Adams and world indoor champion
Anjanette Kirkland ran 2-3 almost the whole way, running 13.11 and 13.14.
Had the race gone another meter, tall Donica Merriman (13.15), running
on the rail, probably would have slipped by Kirkland for the No. 3 spot
on the team. Fortunately for Merriman, this is one of the events that
will have a four-member team: as the defending champ, Devers gets a
wild card entry.
"The rain wasn't a factor,"
said Devers. "I've trained in a lot worse than this."
