Women's 10,000
Final
The race went as expected.
Drossin was in no hurry to lead. Why should she? She has a World Champs
qualifier and could almost win at will. Besides, she might be doubling
back tomorrow afternoon in the 5K.
Oregon alum Milena Glusac
did much of the early work at the front, taking the lead on the second
lap, passing through the 1600 and 3200 posts in times of 5:06.6 and
10:21.6.
Another hometown girl, Annette
Peters, running her last race in Eugene, took over just before the completion
of 11 laps. She passed halfway in 16:15.6 and continued to lead through
6200 at which point Glusac surged back to the lead. Sylvia Mosqueda
took the lead back shortly thereafter. At 7K (22:52.8), Drossin went
to the lead and surged, running a 72.8 for lap 19. The shuffling Jen
Rhines went with her for a lap before dropping back. Mosqueda was a
solid 3rd.
Drossin continued to roll
as she began lapping other runners seriously with 4 and 3 laps to go.
She cruised the last circuit in an easy 73.8 to win in 32:05.14. Rhines
held on for 2nd in 32:20.03 ahead of Mosqueda (32:25.22). Mosqueda does
not have the World Champs qualifying time of 32:00.00.
