Men's Triple Jump
LaMark Carter's 56-4 opener
was not only the best jump by an American this year, it gave the Northwestern
Louisiana alum his third national title and put him on his fourth straight
World Championships squad.
Robert Howard, Olympic Trials
winner last year, bounded a windy 55-7 on his third jump, fouled twice,
and then closed with a 54-3 1/4 for second.
NCAA champ Walter Davis struggled
in the first three rounds, using a curiously slow run-up. But the Olympian
came through on his last attempt with a 55-6 1/4 for 3rd.
The trio heading to Edmonton
is the same as last year's Olympic squad for the U.S.
