Men's Shot

Final

Taking the event with his first throw (70--10 1/2), John Godina finally raised his USATF shot title total above his World Champs gold tally. This, Godina's 3rd, nationals victory, came over Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson (67--5 1/4) and John Davis (67--3 1/2).

Nelson, like Godina a spin technician, opened with a foul, followed by 67--3/4, and then with a big yell in frame 3 his best for the day.

The regretable two--flight format put Nelson in 1 and Godina in 2. While Godina fouled every second throw, spraying all of his heaves to the right side of the sector, Nelson, presumably pressing to catch up, had no fair efforts after the reorder.

Davis got his big toss, just 3/4-inch off the PR he set at the Stanford Open (June 9) in round 4. He fouled his last two.
