Men's High Jump

The Utah duo of Charles Clinger (Weber State) and Dave Hoffman (Utah State) crapped out early, both failing to clear 7-3. Henry Patterson looked the best early on, clearing 7-1 3/4, 7-3, 7-4 1/4 and 7-5 3/4 all on first try. Charles Austin and Nathan Leeper also cleared 7-5 1/4, but trailed on misses. Princeton's Tora Harris boldly passed 7-5 1/4. He wasn't close at 7-6 1/2.

The World Champs teams was pretty much set, but the title was not. Patterson and Austin missed on their first attempts at 7-6 1/2, but Leeper cleared on his first. Patterson and Austin both missed their second, and it almost looked as if Leeper had it in the bag as Patterson went out after missing for the third time, but then Charles Austin cleared on his third, electrifying the crowd.

At 7-7 3/4, neither cleared, Leeper getting closer than Austin.

3. Patterson 7-5 1/4.
