Men's Discus
John Godina was the best
thrower of the first flight (why the heck did they go to that dumb NCAA
flights to final format?), but his technique looked off. Each of his
throws went way high, landing sideways and edge down, often digging
deep into the Hayward Field turf. Godina's best throw of the first flight
was his second, a high arcing throw to the right of the sector, 212-6.
The second flight was more
stacked, with Setliff warming up with two practice tosses over 220 feet.
His first throw ended up being his best, 219-4, way to the right of
the sector.
Andy Bloom also got his best
throw on his first, 206-7. Setliff threw 215-9 on his second, which
also would have won the competition.
In the final, Godina improved
on his fourth throw to 214-6.
Nick Petrucci gave Bloom
a bit of a scare, almost relegating him to 4th for the second day in
a row, throwing 206-5, just 2 inches shy of 3rd.
Bloom failed to achieve a
SP/DT double, as he did in '98.
