Men's Decathlon
It don't get much betta than
this. Before the dec's culminating event, the grueling (only for decathletes)
1500, Old Man Kip Janvrin led Phil McMullen by only 7 points. Both are
fabulous (for decathletes) 1500 runners. Janvrin went right to the lead,
with McMullen on his butt. Janvrin couldn't shake the brother of the
'95 and '96 national 1500 champ. With 300 to go, McMullen went to the
lead, surging down the backstretch. But Janvrin didn't give up, sprinting
off the turn, running sub-45 for the last 300, finishing 4:14.96 to
McMullen's 4:17.04, adding 14 points to his bulge to win 8241-8220.
Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay, only 21, had a fantastic meet, to grab the
third World Champs spot with his 8169.
Janvrin becomes the oldest
dec national champ ever.
