3000 meter Steeplechase
Final
Anthony Famiglietti did much
of the leading early on, followed closely by Tim Broe, with Tom Chorny
and Robert Gary also near the front. The pace was moderate, but picked
up a bit in the middle laps.
Gary faded with 2 to go,
as Broe and Fam pushed the pace while the tall Chorny, who hurdled several
water jumps, was tucked in behind.
With a lap to go, Broe took
the lead and opened up a few meters. The Alabama alum's speed carried
him to a 7 meter lead at the final water jump as Chorny and Fam were
about even.
Broe was heading to an easy
win when he hit the final barrier and went down. Chorny cleared the
prone Broe to the left, which Fam had to move out to the right after
clearing the barrier to avoid Broe.
Chorny sprinted ahead to
win in an American leading 8:22.16, with Fam a close second in 8:22.68.
Broe rolled up after his fall and was able to hold off Clint Wells for
the final team berth 8:24.66-8:25.73.
A dejected looking Broe received
a huge ovation on the victory stand.

Heats
Heat 1
Tim Broe and Anthony Famiglietti moved to the front of the first heat
and never looked back. Broe led much of the race and finished as the
fasted qualifier in 8:25.47. Famiglietti followed closely in 8:25.52
for second. Ray Hughes (8:25.94), Steve Slattery (8:26.45), and Tom
Chorny (8:27.69) all dipped under 8:30 to essentially guarantee their
place in the final.
Heat 2
Daniel Lincoln pulled the second heat along for more than 2000 meters.
The pace was not as quick as the first heat but remained honest. Around
2500 meters Clint Wells (8:32.83) took over the pace and pushed through
to finish first. Robert Gary (8:36.19) and Daniel Lincoln (8:37.12)
both qualified automatically.
