Men's 1500 Final
The presence of prep phenom
Alan Webb is the straw that really stirs the drink in what, even without
him, should be an intriguing race.
Webb is the fastest miler
in the nation this season (3:53.43). NCAA champ Bryan Berryhill is the
fastest at 1500 (3:37.05), and he has vowed to chase the World Championships
A standard (3:36.20) in this final.
That gives Webb less to worry
about tactically, but almost certainly puts another High School Record
on his to-do list if he wants to win.
Then there's Olympian Gabe
Jennings. He didn't even make our list of preview picks, as he'd said
he wouldn't run here.
But after losing to Berryhill
at the NCAA, the unpredictable Jennings says he ran 30 miles the next
day, 116 miles the next week, and 130 miles the week after that... After
averaging just 30-40/week this spring.
Jennings looked fantastic
in his heat so don't count him out.
And remember, Jennings's
Stanford and Olympic teammate Michael Stember, USATF indoor champ Seneca
Lassiter and all the others won't want to lose to a high school kid.
