Boston Mayor's Cup Cross Country

Franklin Park, Boston MA; 26-Oct-97

Reported by Steve Vaitones

Major Sponsors: Boston Parks Department,
Boston Athletic Association, adidas, PowerBar, USATF-New England
450 entrants in men's & women's races
Weather: 50's clear and great XC weather

The eighth annual Boston Mayor's Cup went to a pair of past winners who
both decided to go for their wins from the front. Kathy Franey continued
her hot fall with a 20-second win over Marie McMahon. Franey wasn't
challenged after the first of three laps, smoothly striding to her own
pace. McMahon, The Irish Olympian, has completed her xc elgibility at
Providence but will return for a final track season; she held off the hard
charging Kristen Beaney for the number two spot.
Life University's Silah Misoi is well known as a front-runner, who had
some wild opening laps on the track last spring. The NAIA champion gained
almost his full margin in the first mile, clocking 4:18 for the split.
He continued without a challenge to smash the course record by 14 seconds
with his 22:55 time.
Behind him, teammate Sammy Nyamongo was the closest for three laps, but
Robert Gary finished strongly to take the silver (and $200) by 8 seconds
in 23:04, also under the previous standard. The race produced the deepest
ever field in race history as 20 runners eclipsed 24:00 on the damp but
firm 7935 meter circuit.

Mohamud runs wild

In the boy's age 15-18 5K race run concurrently with the men, Boston's
Abdirizak Mohamud brought the record for scholastic runners on the course
down by a whopping 30 seconds. Tucked in confortably among the leaders,
the defending Foot Locker champion was towed to a 14:42 clocking for the
traditional HS course; Jonathon Riley had the previous mark of 15:12 set
in last year's Mayor's Cup.

Reported by Michael Scott

Cook and Wilson Successfully Defend PNAC Titles Against Elite Fields

(Seattle, WA)--Tacoma's Rob Cook and Eugene's Liz Wilson successfully
defended their individual titles at today's Pacific Northwest Association
Championship Cross Country meet contested over Seattle's challenging Lower
Woodland Park.

Hometown favorite Rob Cook, who last year won the USA/Reebok Cross Country
Grand Prix Series and finished fifth at the USA Cross Country
championships, bolted to the lead at the starting gun and ran away from an
all-star field that included world championships team member Dan Nelson
(Eugene), Oregon redshirt Nick Rogers (Mt Si High School), Olympic
Marathon Trials sixth-placer Keith Dowling (Boulder), and World University
Games 5000 & 10,000 medalist Dan Browne (Virginia/ Portland native).
Cook gradually extended his lead over the challenging 9.7-kilometer
course, finally ending up 23-seconds ahead of his closest challenger Dan
Nelson--a three-time winner of this event--as he recorded a winning time
of 30-minutes, 23-second. Former Mt. Si standout Rogers led the chase
pack for most of the race before falling to Nelson's strong finish.
The Richmond, BC-based Kajaks barely edged hometown Club Northwest for the
men's team title 37pts to 38pts, with Bellingham's Team FootZone close
behind with 45 points.

In the women's race, former University of Oregon star Liz Wilson, who has
represented the US internationally on numerous national teams, also led
from wire-to-wire to defend her title against an elite field that included
US national team members Michelle Chalmers (Missoula)--who was the 1990
Pac-10 10,000 runner-up for Washington--Susannah Beck (Eugene) and Laura
LaMena-Coll (Eugene), as well as Canadian champions Lori Durward
(Vancouver, BC) and Lisa Harvey (Calgary).
Chalmers stayed close to Wilson for the entire race but was unable to
lessen the gap to closer than 6-seconds at the finish as Wilson won in
21-minutes, 4-second. Durward closed strongly over the courses hilly
second half to place third.
Club Northwest's Emily Anderson (Seattle) edged out Olympia's Shelley
Smathers to win the PNAC title, which goes to the top local (i.e., Western
Washington) finisher. Cook, the overall men's winner, claimed the men's
PNAC title.
The Club Northwest women ran unchallenged to the women's team title.

USATF New England Champs

Franklin Park, Boston MA; 16-Nov-97

Reported by Steve Vaitones

In snowy conditions similar to those in which she won the World Cross
Country Championshps in 1992 at Franklin Park, Lynn Jennings won Sunday's
USATF New England Cross Country Championships, outdistancing runner-up
Molly Watcke of Newbury MA by a full one minute ten seconds over the 6
kilometer (3.7 mile) course.
Joan Nesbit of Carrboro NC, who won the USATF Championship in 1995
on this same course, was third.

Former Providence College All-American Mike Donnelly ran to a solid win
over former Dartmouth standout Ray Pugsley on the snowy and muddy course,
as poor footing slowed times significantly.

Central Mass. Striders earned both the men's and women's New England team
champion titles.

USA NORTHWEST REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Blue Lake Park, Portland, Oregon (Site of '97 USA XC Nats)
Saturday, November 22, 1997

Reported by Mike Scott

Conditions: Cold, driving winds
Course: Mostly flat, wet grass; uneven footing

(Portland, OR, November 22)--Former University of Portland star Pete
Julian (Boulder, Co) outlasted '96 USA/Reebok Grand Prix Champ Rob Cook
(Tacoma, Wa) at the November 22 USA Northwest Regional Cross Country
Championships contested at Portland's Blue Lake Park, while four-time NCAA
track champ Claire Eichner-Taylor (Eugene, Or) returned to the winner's
podium with a run-away victory in the women's competition. Seattle-based
Club Northwest swept the team titles as runners previewed the course that
will be the site of the December 7 USA Cross Country Championships.
Competing in extremely wet, windy conditions that at times bordered on the
ridiculous, '97 USA 10,000 bronze medalist Pete Julian drafted off '96 USA
Cross Country fifth-placer Rob Cook for the first four miles as the two
pulled away from a strong field that included Dan Nelson, Dan Browne, and
Ashley Johnson. Julian waited until the course turned so that the wind was
at their back before surging and gradually pulling away from Cook to win
in 24-minutes, 28-seconds over the two-loop 8-kilometer course. Cook
finished nine seconds behind in 24:37, while Nelson edged Johnson 25:02 to
25:03.

Former Wisconsin star Claire Eichner-Taylor, who won four NCAA titles at
the 1500, mile, and 3000 for the Badgers, ran away from the women's field
to win in 28:53 over the same 8k course that the senior women will contest
at nationals. Former Arizona State standout Kelly Cordell, who qualified
for last spring's 10,000 USA Championships, finished second in 29:38, just
ahead of former Auburn star Rachel Sauder.
