2006 HIGH SCHOOL BOYS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
WALTER HENNING
by Jon Hendershott
Setting goals for his hammer throwing is nothing new to Walter Henning. Neither is achieving them, nor then setting out a whole new set of even-higher aims.
Henning's achievements during his 11th-grade campaign rewrote the High School Record with the Junior hammer–just like he planned. He plans to shoot for even more records during his senior season at St. Anthony's High in South Huntington, New York, on the north shore of Long Island.
Henning's new goals will now include defending his honor as Athlete Of The Year...

2006 HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
GABBY MAYO
by Kirk Reynolds
When you're young like Gabby Mayo, the past and the future are remote. National Records set recently might as well have been decades ago, and personal goals and longevity are counted by Olympiads. It's astonishingly refreshing. And her Athlete Of The Year season was even more remarkable when you realize she still has another year to come.
In a lengthy November-through-August junior season at Raleigh's Southeast High, she ran HS-leading marks in both the 100 (11.16) and 200 (22.88), earned No. 1 All-America rankings in both events, raced onto all-time lists, won no end of major meets and ran anchor on a World Junior Recordsetting 4 x 100 relay.
Ask her about her senior season to come...
