MORE NAMES FOR BOSTON

BOSTON (USA): Saturday´s Reebok Boston Indoor Games will feature seven winners of last week‘s Millrose Games. Mainly Bernard Lagat running his first indoor 5000 m. Also competing Lisa Barber at 60 m, Monica Hargrove at 400 m, Chelsea Johnson in the pole vault, Ivory Williams in the 60 m and Mark Hollis in the pole vault. British Hannah England runs 3000 m against Shannon Rowbury and young Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia. Her older sister Tirunesh is targeting world indoor record at 5000 m. Hurdler Bershawn Jackson is scheduled to compete at 400 m against Bahamian world and olympic finalist Chris Brown.

 

DUSSELDORF IS READY FOR BEST EVER, DEBUTS FOR ROBLES AND MAJEWSKI

DUSSELDORF (GER): Six olympic winners are scheduled to compete at next European Athletics Indoor Permit meet on Wednesday, the 5th PSD Bank Meeting in Dusseldorf. The event will be the place for season openers of Cuban summer world record holder Dayron Robles, Poland´s Beijing shot put winner Tomasz Majewski. Dwight Phillips will again run the 60 m. In women 60 m Carmelita Jeter comes after Glasgow win and will meet year´s fastest Laverne Jones-Ferrette of US Virgin Islands. 2004 Olympic winner Yuriy Borzakovskiy of Russia after Karlsruhe win takes on Beijing medalist Ahmed Ismail of Sudan. In list of olympic winners also veterans Allen Johnson and Chandra Sturrup. In total 140 athletes from 31 countries are expected. Kenyan Augustin Choge will run against world leader Gideon Gathimba in the 1500 m.  Daniel Kipchirchir Komen and steeple specialist Paul Kipsiele Koech will target a fast 5000 m time. Lolo Jones will be able to confirm her 60 m hurdles shape, new opponent European Indoor Champion Eline Berings of Belgium. World champion Yargelis Savigne of Cuba is the star of her event, a world lead should be a must (14.40 so far). Traditional very solid depth in men´s pole vault. Eurosport offers live coverage from 7.10 to 9 pm.

 

KIBET AIMS FOR VIENNA MARATHON

NAIROBI (KEN): Osaka 2007 World marathon champion, Luke Kibet, who won his second Singapore Marathon title in December, is aiming to star at the April 30 Vienna City race in Austria. He did not run last weekend at the cross country police event, „I decided to skip as I did not want to put pressure on the tendon I injured in Singapore that has recovered well,“ he was quoted by The Nation. He already won Vienna in 2007 with 2:10:07.

 

QUESTIONMARK OVER VLASIC-FRIEDRICH DUEL

ARNSTADT (GER): Questionmark remains over the possible clash of world top two best female high jumpers. Croatian world champion Blanka Vlasic canceled Goteborg but still wants to compete in Arnstadt on Saturday at the special high jump meet with music. As www.leichtathletik.de informs, there is no contractual problem but her health situation. Back problems of European indoor champion Ariane Friedrich are also opening the question about her availability to compete on Saturday. She was forced to stop after clearing two meters on Sunday in Karlsruhe. More will be known within next days. In the field also Italian record holder Antonietta Di Martino who should open her season here, US Chaunte Howard, Russians Irina Gordeyeva, Viktoriya Klyugina and Svetlana Shkolina, Kazakhstan´s Marina Aitova, Emma Green of Sweden and Czech Iva Strakova. Russians world leader Ivan Ukhov and World champion Yaroslav Rybakov are the top male entries.

 

KIPROP HEADS FOR STOCKHOLM

STOCKHOLM (SWE): Olympic winner Asbel Kiprop was a last minute replacement for Ethiopian Deresse Mekonnen, the 2008 world 1500m indoor champion at last Friday´s Millrose Games. When Kiprop was contacted by his manager, Federico Rosa, about coming to New York he was preparing for a completely different race in Europe on 10 February. „My preparation was ahead of Stockholm where I was preparing to race at the 800-meters,“ he explained.  „It was really a surprise that I was racing today.  This is a miler who is preparing to do some 800.“ Writes RRW.

 

MOKOENA BACK IN AFRICA

GLASGOW (GBR): Slight strain during warm-up at Aviva Match last Saturday in Glasgow canceled the European indoor plans for World Indoor Champion Khotso Mokoena of South Africa. The silver holder from Beijing and Berlin will now rest and prepare at home and should compete at Yellow Series meets in South Africa. First is scheduled for February 19 in Port Elizabeth.

BUDAPEST (HUN): All-Athletics.com announced the athletes of the year 2009 in marathon, road running and walking based on their rankings. Marathon runners of 2009 are Samuel Wanjiru and Irina Mikitenko. Road runners of the year are Bernard Kipyego and Mary Keitany and walkers of the year World champions from Russia Valeriy Borchin and Olga Kaniskina. Following this also the top ones at each continent are announced. Details at www.all-athletics.com. Just to mention the European number ones. In Marathon Irina Mikitenko and Dmytro Baranovsky of Ukraine, in road running Irishman Martin Fagan and German Sabrina Mockenhaupt and walking as in the world order. 

 

MOSCOW (RUS): Olympic high jump winner Andrey Silnov who is back in training might compete on Sunday at IAAF Permit Russian Winter. But it is not sure, as All-Sport informs. After last year difficulties with achilles he is not aiming for Doha participation. „I m still not in the shape to jump with best,“ he was quoted. Silnov is part of Yevgeniy Zagorulko coaching group. 

 

LAUSANNE (SUI): The indoor arenas around Europe came alive in January, with a number of athletes already showing their form after winter training and ready to lay claim to top honors in 2010. Following this, European Athletics is pleased to announce the nominations for the European Athlete of the Month for January representing nine countries. The voting will close on Monday 15 February at noon CET.

 

STOCKHOLM (SWE): IEC in Sports, the international media agency, is informing on its website that it has secured new deals for the IAAF World Athletics Series, signing agreements in Greece and Portugal. The deals come just days after IEC agreed partnerships with terrestrial broadcasters TV4 and SVT in Sweden, the agency‘s home country. ERT in Greece and RTP in Portugal will cover the World Athletics Series until 2013 under the terms of the agreement.

 

MOSCOW (RUS): IAAF informed that it approved the world junior record of Stanislav Yemelyanov who achieved at 10 km road walking 38:28. The European junior champion 2009 achieved this time at IAAF Walking Challenge final last year in Saransk, Russia.

 

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA):  Brazilian IAAF Council member Roberto Gesta de Melo was re-elected president of CONSUDATLE, the South American Athletics Confederation. Representatives of 13 countries took part at the congress of this body. Senior vice-president is Ciro Solano of Colombia and other three vice-presidents  Nelson Rodríguez Freites (Venezuela),  Marcos Luque (Bolivia) and Ricardo Sasso (Panama).

NOGENT-SUR-OISE (FRA, Jan 31): Reigning 50 km walk European Champion Yohan Diniz achieved world leading 5000 m indoor mark 18:47.57.

 

KRASNODAR (RUS, Jan 30): At Gubernator´s Cup meet Olga Kucherenko leaped to world leading 671. Second Anna Nazarova, 2007 European U23 Champion had 668, heptathlon olympic medalist Tatyana Chernova 665 as third and fourth place for triple world indoor champion Tatyana Kotova (652) who jumped for first time since giving birth to her child last year. New name of Russian female sprinting Yulia Katsura improved at 60 m to 7.22. Cottbus winner Aleksandr Gripich cleared 560 in pole vault.

 

KOBE (JPN, Jan 31): Japan champions at 20 km walk were crowned Koichiro Morioka (1:20:43) and Mayumi Kawasaki (1:30:37). Kumi Otoshi as second improved her PB to 1:30:58. But male winner was a Korean guest, Kim Hyun-sub clocked 1:20:39.

 

MOSCOW (RUS, Feb 1): During Moscow City U23 championships former world indoor champion Natalya Nazarova posted years second fastest 51.95 at 400 m.  Relay olympic winner Aleksandra Fedoriva was the fastest in the 60 m with 7.24 life-time best. Maya Foreman cleared new Israeli indoor record in high jump 186. In solid 1500 m won by Yuriy Koldin (3:42.40) as fourth veteran Vyacheslav Shabunin (40) achieved world masters indoor record 3:44.39.  Former one was held by Eamonn Coghlan 3:45.3 in 1993.

 

PERTH (AUS, Jan 31): Olympic and world gold medalist Steven Hooker opened at local meet as announced with 540 clearance.

 

EL PRAT DE LLOBREGAT (ESP, Jan 31): Jose David Dominguez beat at 20 km walk veteran and former world champion Jesus Angel Garcia (1:27:11). Lithuanian Brigita Virbalyte won women´s 20 km in 1:36:45.

 

CHAPEL HILL (USA, Jan 30): Fast 7.69 at 60 m hurdles by Ty Akins. Former European Champion Muriel Hurtis-Houairi clocked 7.43 at 60 m.

 

SAO PAULO (BRA, Jan 29): South American discus bronze medalist Ronald Juliao improved Brazilian discus record to 60.41 m. Former mark of Jose Araujo de Souza was 60.26 in 1990.

 

MEETINGS NEWS

  

VIENNA (AUT): At today´s Vienna Indoor classic almost 500 entries from 32 countries are registered. That is a new record in number of nations for the event. Among interesting entries Brazilian 800 m runner Kleberson Davide, British long jump Berlin 5th placer Greg Rutherford, Italian pole vault record holder Ana Giordano Bruno and German Lars Borgeling, Greek record holder Kostas Filippidis and strong Czech group in men´s pole vault.

 

ROMA (ITA): Italian federation FIDAL announced that Swiss Bettina Borner will be new athletes liaison for the IAAF Diamond League meet Golden Gala in Rome. She previously worked for Weltklasse Zurich in the same position.

 

TAIPEI (TPE):  The 2010 Chinese Taipei International Athletic Meet scheduled for May 28-29 will try to attract international stars. The meet will be so upgraded and will follow on the Asian May circuit as last one after Doha, Daegu and Shanghai.
