EME NEWS (DEC 17, 2009) DEFAR FOR 3000 M STUTTGART (GER): More top names were announced for 24th Sparkassen Cup IAAF Indoor Permit meeting in Stuttgart on February 6. Meseret Defar of Ethiopia will return to the place where she in 2007 clocked the current 3000 m world indoor record. Interestingly during the same weekend her main rival Tirunesh Dibaba will run a 5000 m in Boston. Current world indoor champion at 3000 m Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia will be also there. EME NEWS already reported that Cuban summer world record holder Dayron Robles should start here his winter season at 60 m Hurdles. The olympic winner should meet with US David Oliver who missed much of last season due to injury. Pole Vault world champion Anna Rogowska of Poland competes with German elite headed by Silke Spiegelburg. Another world indoor champion Lolo Jones will run the 60 m hurdles. In the unusual 4x100 German medal winners from Berlin will compete (Sailer, Mollinger, Tschirch, Wagner). In the 60 m their main rival another Valencia winner Angela Williams of USA. In men´s Pole Vault Berlin silver winner Romain Mesnil is planning to compete against German top jumpers headed by European indoor bronze winner Alexander Straub.
ZURICH IS NUMBER ONE WITH 16 BERLIN CHAMPIONS COMPETING BRATISLAVA (SVK): In the statistical survey of one day top meetings in terms of individual World Champions from Berlin 2009 participating the best is Weltklasse of Zurich with 16 such athletes. It should be noted that meetings after the championships already knew the names of champions. From the meetings before Berlin the best is Rome, Lausanne and London with 13 champions. Here it should be noted that London was staged over two days with more events and that means more options to have future champions. That was within Golden League and Super Grand Prix meetings. OTHER NEWS PHOENIX (USA): As azcentral.com <http://azcentral.com> informs top US runners and Olympic Trials 2008 marathon winners Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor will make their P.F. Chang‘s Rock ‚n‘ Roll Arizona debuts by running in the half-marathon on January 17. More than 30,000 entrants are expected for the seventh annual event. Both are US half-marathon record holders with 59:43 and 1:07:34.
BARCELONA (ESP): A minimal V-shaped medal that aims to reflect the simplicity, honesty and dynamism of athletics will be awarded to competitors at the Barcelona 2010 European Athletics Championships. Informs organizing committee and European Athletics. Spanish artist Martín Ruiz de Azúa‘s innovative design breaks with the traditional style of medals at earlier European Athletics Championships. The main design feature of the medal allows both the name of the successful athlete and the championships to be visible at the same time.
LA PLAGNE (FRA): French star sprinter Christine Arron hopes to compete in summer. The Pierre-Jean Vazel coached athlete said for L´Equipe that in past two and half months she was swimming and hopes to resume a normal training next month. She plans towards European Championships in Barcelona and says: “I think for me 11 flat level should be possible.” Arron did not confirm goals towards Olympics 2012. The 36-years old athlete clocked in 2009 11.48 as fastest time. Last time the European record holder achieved sub 11 was in 2005.
STOCKHOLM (SWE): DN Galan of Stockholm announced its program of events for the 2010 edition on August 6. There are 15 Diamond Race events including Swedish marquee ones like men´s triple jump (Christian Olsson) and women´s 100 m hurdles (Susanna Kallur). Also men´s shot put the day before as in the past two years will be held as part of the Diamond Race. Additionally meeting director Rajne Soderberg mentions three more events which are not part of the Diamond program. That will be men´s 400 m and 3000 m steeple and women shot put the day before.
BEIJING (CHN): Coach Zhu Lidong and his two female sprinters who cheated in a dope test have been given bans of up to four years. Agencies are informing. Ha Xianpin has 11.56 and 23.39 lifetime bests and was second at national championships in the 200 m. The other one Teng Haina (11.70/24.04) was sent by coach as Ha to take the out of competition test in July. But the testers realized she is looking different. Long distance runner Xie Fang (solid quality PB´s 15:03.95 and 31:21.25) missed a test in July and was also banned for four years.
NAIROBI (KEN): Kenyan media are reporting that athletics personalities were among recipients of State Orders, decorations and medals handed out as the country commemorated 46 years of self-rule. Berlin World champions Linet Masai, Ezekiel Kemboi and Vivian Cheruiyot were conferred with the high Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) in the Disciplined Forces Division. Also recognized with the same accolade is former national athletics coach, Julius Kirwa, who stepped down just before August Berlin World Championships for military duty. World men’s Marathon champion and Administration Police officer, Abel Kirui, led the sports heroes bestowed with the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) credit in the Disciplined Forces Division. Others given similar honors include Berlin silver winners, Janeth Jepkosgei, Alfred Kirwa Yego, Sylvia Kibet and bronze medallists Moses Masai and Milka Chemos.
MOSCOW (RUS): President of Russian Athletics Federation and IAAF Council member Valentin Balakhnichev was again elected into the board of Russian Olympic Committee. Current president Leonid Tyagachev was voted into his third term as president. More than 200 representatives of different bodies took part at the General Assembly of Russian Olympic Committee. First vice-president of Russian athletics federation and former excellent long jumper Igor Ter-Ovanesyan was voted into the control commission of the ROC.
CARACAS (VEN): Triple and long jumper Veronica Davis and high jumper Albert Bravo have been voted Athletes of the Year in Venezuela. Bravo has an interesting versatility with improving to 46.48 at 400 m, 13.89 at 110 m Hurdles and clearing 222 in high jump. He won two golds and one silver at Bolivar Games. Davis won the Bolivar Games and improved the national triple jump record to 13.97 m.
ORLANDO (USA): The Bowerman, an award bestowed to the nation’s top collegiate men’s and women’s track and field athlete, was presented to Galen Rupp of Oregon and Jenny Barringer of Colorado on Wednesday night at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando. The ceremony, attended by over 1200 people, took place in conjunction with the annual convention of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). HOFU (JPN): Japan Running News blog of Brett Larner informs that the last competitive marathon of the year takes place on Sunday in Hofu. In the 40th edition of the race the headliner is Athens Olympian Tomoaki Kunichika. The 36-years old runner has 2:07:52 PB from winning Fukuoka in 2003.
KIYIV (UKR): Multiple European CC Champion Serhiy Lebid revealed for Ukrainian media after his another medal on Sunday in Dublin that since 1992 he was able to run in training and at the competitions 117 000 km.
DOHA (QAT): The site of next years World Indoor Championships will stage another important event still in this year. The Golf Countries Championships in cross country on December 23.
FLAGSTAFF (USA): Adidas has extended its financial support for McMillanElite, an in-residence training group in Flagstaff, Arizona, through 2013, coach Greg McMillan announced today. The sponsorship agreement allows McMillanElite to assist up to 15 emerging elite distance runners, McMillan said. The adidas team contract provides equipment, race travel and housing support. Athletes also receive a health insurance subsidy, injury prevention treatment (including massage subsidy), comprehensive physiological monitoring, and „fast track“ medical care. McMillanElite focuses on training promising post-collegiate athletes with aspirations to run at a national or international level from 1500m through the marathon. In 2009, the group achieved 14 top-10 finishes at various USA national championships (including 8 top-5‘s), earned seven national team slots, and had one national champion (Brett Gotcher, 20 km). BUDAPEST (HUN): In All-Athletics poll who would win a special 600 m race 48 percent voted for Usain Bolt and close 42 percent for Kenenisa Bekele. Some 10 percent said it is a stupid idea to have such a race.
RESULTS VIENTIANE (LAO, Dec 17): Two new games records during last day of athletics at 25th South East Asian Games in Laos. Unexpected quality is mainly the 10 000 m female win by Indonesian Triyaningish with 32:49.47 what is also new national record. She did not had before a sub 34 minutes mark on her credit. It is her second gold after she won also the 5000 m and achieved the same double as at the 2007 games. Second event best by Malaysian Berlin participant in pole vault Roslinda Samsu who cleared 415 in pole vault. For her, it is already a hat-trick of wins at this games since 2005. The same three wins in a row also for Singapore female shot putter Zhang Guirong with 17.12 m. Thailand won both final sprint relays in 39.34 and 44.54. Second Vietnam improved the national record to 44.82. Games records were broken in total of 13 events. Nine countries won medals, the best was Thailand (14-20-14) ahead of Indonesia (7-7-7) and Vietnam (7-4-11).
