NEARLY ALL TOP NAMES FOR LONDON
LONDON (GBR): Virgin London Marathon is promising also for 2010 something special for the 30th edition on April 25. Both title defenders are coming, Kenyan olympic winner Samuel Wanjiru and German WMM winner Irina Mikitenko. „These elite fields are as good as any we‘ve had in the previous 29 London Marathons,“ said race director David Bedford, who set a world 10,000m record in 1973. Six men in the field have broken 2:05:30. Running will be other olympic medallists Jaouad Gharib and Tsegaye Kebede, current world champion Abel Kirui of Kenya, three-time London winner Martin Lel, second fastest ever Duncan Kibet. Also in the field double New York winner Marilson Gomes Dos Santos from Brazil and half-marathon multiple world champion Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea who wants to finish his second marathon. Interesting debut for Briton Andrew Lemoncello. In the women field six have sub 2:22 bests, writes Race Results Weekly. Russia‘s Liliya Shobukhova, who finished third in London last year and won Chicago is other main name along with home Mara Yamauchi, reigning world champion Xue Bai of China, US Deena Kastor, the 2004 Olympic Marathon bronze medallist who won London in 2006; Ethiopia‘s Magarsa Askale Tafa and Bezunesh Bekele; Japan‘s Yoshimi Ozaki, last summer‘s world championships silver medallist; and Russia‘s Lyudmila Petrova, second at New York last month. Also entered is Romanian olympic gold medalist Constantina Dita and Russian recent Yokohama winner Inga Abitova. Here in debuts department to note another Russian olympic 10 000 m fifth placer and 30:32 performer Mariya Konovalova. There are hardly any other top names left for other spring marathons.

 
SURIN IN HEADLINES
MONTREAL (CAN): Interesting news from Canadian athletics. Former world and olympic medalist sprinter Bruny Surin who plans to attack masters records in indoor races in coming weeks will be inducted in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. He is also expected to become the newest President of the Quebec Athletics Federation on Saturday morning just before he attempts to break the Canadian/World 50m masters indoor record. And he also will carry the olympic torch outside Montreal on December 11. Current best Canadian athlete hurdles olympic and world medalist Priscilla Lopes-Schliep will be at the Ontario Track and Field Awards where it is expected she will win Athlete of the Year.  She is also rumored to be in the running for the Canadian Press Athlete of the Year.  An award that is voted on by 240 Canadian Media Members.  And she will also run with olympic torch, on December 28 just outside Toronto.

 
SEBRLE AS GOLFER
PRAHA (CZE): Decathlon world record holder in an interview for spikesmag.com <http://spikesmag.com>  admitted that he would prefer Olympic golf gold in 2016 to Olympic decathlon gold in 2012. Currently Sebrle trains for another season in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

 
IDOWU PLANS
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Triple jump world champion Philips Idowu confirmed for the indoor season his participation at three major home events. On January 30 in the Aviva Match in Glasgow, then the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Sheffield (February 13-14) and Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham (Feb 20, IAAF Indoor Permit). Idowu lives and trains in Birmingham since 2008. Idowu plans also to defend his World indoor title from Valencia and wants to improve his indoor best which is also his overall PB 17.75 from 2008 World Indoors winning competition.

 
 
 
DUBLIN TEAMS
 
 
FRANKFURT (GER): Germany is sending to European CC Championships in Dublin six full teams, in total 31 runners (16 men and 15 women). Last year U23 women got the team bronze. The selection – men: Uliczka, Hallmann, Glatting, Beckmann, U23: Roba-Kinkal, Hahn, Raabe, Schwiegelsohn, Lenz, Schwarz, junior: Groschel, Kreibich, Karus, Duppich, Clarkson, Schramm. Women: Viellehner, Restle, Heuck, Schutz, U23: Hahner, Schrulle, Schwennen, Danner, Aehling, junior: Sussmann, Harrer, Heinrich, Krause, Platt, Stocker.

 
MADRID (ESP): Spain as running power in Europe will be represented in Dublin in all categories by teams. In total 36 runners (18 male and 18 female). In top shape is the big medal hope for men senior race Alemayehu Bezabeh who will be helped by Ayad Lamdassem, Carles Castillejo, Sergio Sanchez, Javier Lopez and Javier Guerra. In women team is missing steeple world champion Marta Dominguez. But even without her the team will be strong with Rosa Morato, Nuria Fernandez, Iris Fuentes-Pila, Alessandra Aguilar, Diana Martin and Sonja Bejarano. Other categories selections – men U23: Lozano, Elbendir, I. Fernandez, Martos, Mateo, Cavio, men junior: Abadia, A. Fernandez, Bustos, Ortiz, Mirabel, Villa, women U23: Jordan, Pereira, G. Martin, Labrado, Ledesma, Gutierrez, women junior: Mosquera, Tobal, Tur, Esteban, D. Martin, Koreno. From these names for example Mohamed Elbendir is reigning European U23 5000 m champion.

 
STOCKHOLM (SWE): Sweden´s team for Dublin is headlined by steeple national record holder Mustafa Mohamed who will be the only male senior runner. Women will have also a team with Isabellah Andersson, Lisa Blomme, Malin Ewerlof Krepp and Ulrika Johansson. Other individual starters are U23 runners Alexander Soderberg and Gabriella Samuelsson in women section. The only junior is Anton Danielson.

STOCKHOLM (SWE):  WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency presented new guidelines concerning the monitoring of blood profiles for evidence of cheating. The executive committee of the organization ratified the guidelines for the athlete biological passport system that has been under consideration since 2002. The guidelines provide advice to anti-doping agencies on how to implement programs to collect and store athletes‘ blood samples and monitor them for any variations that could indicate doping - without an actual positive test. Agencies are writing.

 
NAIROBI (KEN): African Confederation web-site informs that just a few weeks after Patrick Ndururi, Kenya has lost another of its 800m runner. 1994 Commonwealth champion Patrick Konchellah passed away at age 41 after over two months struggle with stomach cancer. Patrick, a younger brother of two-time world champion Billy Konchellah, also finished 4th at the 1997 World Championships and had a PB of 1:42.98.

 
DRESDEN (GER): World high jump medalist Raul Spank will jump at the 5th international indoor jumping meeting in Dresden on January 29. Writes local media. Spank is also scheduled to compete at another special meet in Arnstadt on February 6.

 

NAIROBI (KEN): The Standard writes that Athletics Kenya will issue a statement in the coming year suspending all road races in the country until the federation reviews how they are organized and run. At the same time, AK will also set the minimum prize money road races can offer to athletes as it seeks to clamp down on the bludgeoning numbers of such events in the country.

 

ROMA (ITA): Already 8000 runners are entered the Rome Marathon on March 21 next year. It is an increase by 12 percent in comparison to last edition, interestingly bigger interest comes from abroad.

 

INDIANAPOLIS (USA): USATF informs that long distance runner Colleen De Reuck has been named the 2009 Masters Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field‘s Masters Committee. De Reuck will be honored on Saturday, December 5, at the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.  As 45 years old Colleen De Reuck is the oldest woman ever to win a major U.S. championship, having won the 2009 U.S. 20 km Championships by a margin of 17 seconds. De Reuck took control before the halfway point of the race to win the women‘s title in 1:07:21.

 

TOKYO (JPN): Brett Larner informs on his blog that on Tuesday the Meiji Seiyaku corporation announced that on Nov. 30 it had terminated its sponsorship of Bejing Olympics men‘s marathon gold medalist Samuel Wanjiru. In November last year, Wanjiru signed a lucrative one-year contract with Meiji Seiyaku to endorse the Savas sports supplement, but this year the company declined to renew the contract. A spokesperson for Meiji Seiyaku cited „a change in our marketing plans“ in explaining the move.

 

TALLINN (EST): In the wake of cancellation of Reval Hotels Cup, the only international multi-events indoor meeting, the Estonian Athletics Federation made a move to improve the situation. The national combined events championships will change the date to February 12-13 and will be staged as an open competition also for foreign athletes and will so in some way replace the planned meeting which was supposed to have also European Athletics Permit.
