T&FN’s NCAA On-Site Blog With Dave Johnson:
Final Report Of Meet

Bookmark and Share
In order to protect its broadcasting rights, the NCAA has instituted new rules in 2008 which restrict how much “live coverage” is permitted from its championships meets.

So unlike past years T&FN will not be able to bring you ongoing by-event coverage of the meet from an accredited journalist. Instead, we will be permitted 10 updates during each day.

T&FN will apparently be the only media outlet which actually has an accredited blogger on site; all other “live” blogs are from people either sitting in the spectator seats or watching streaming video at home.

The people back in California, however, have set up a special forum for by-event coverage and everyone is free to contribute to that.

Saturday Report #2

(15:15 PDT)

Women's Pentathlon
The 5-eventer goes to the 800m, the final event, with Michigan junior Bettie Wade holding a 49-point advantage over the favorite, Arizona State's Jacquelyn Johnson. Wade has 3630, with Johnson at 3581. Johnson's points are critical for ASU's title hopes, and she'll run the concluding event while her teammates, Sarah Stevens and Jessica Pressley compete in the Shot Put.

Stevens is picked to win the SP, with Pressley picked 3rd. Pressley out-performed the charts yesterday with her 2nd-place finish in the Weight. Stevens, the second thrower in the first flight, immediately took the lead with a big throw (he wrote, not knowing the mark, but all the while hoping it would appear someplace before posting. I'll fill it in later.) She fouled her second attempt, then intentionally fouled her third, but still held the lead at the conclusion of the first flight.

Back to the Hept 800: Johnson took off to a 15m lead after the first 200m, with Wade another 25m back. Johnson ran 62.7 at the 400, clearly far enough ahead of Wade to win. Johnson was 11 seconds ahead at the bell, and finished her wire-to-wire win in 2:13.45, with Wade at 2:26.61.

Final scores: Johnson 4496 CR (4425 Austra Skujyte [KsSt] '02), Wade 4366, Quinley 4256, Wichmann 4177, Hunter 4141.

Men's High Jump
HJ is underway, with the bar now at the second height, 2.14/7-0.25.

Saturday report #3 at 16:00 PDT.

After that we'll post after each pair of running events: Mile (4), 800 (5), 400 (6), 60 (7), 3000 (8), 4x400 (9), Team Scores (10)

Saturday Report #1

(14:30 PDT)

Men's Heptathlon
The 1000m, the concluding event of the men's Heptathlon is up first. Florida State's Barroilhet, orignally charted for 6th, starts the last event with 5178 points, good for a 170-point margin over Stanford's Josh Hustedt, who was picked for 7th. Continuing the topsy-turvy nature of the formchart, Oregon's Ashton Eaton, pegged as the winner, is currently 7th, at 4813. Tennessee's Jangy Addy was picked 2nd and stands 3rd at 4986, with a 12-point margin over Mike Morrison of Florida. The 12 points is the equivalent of a bit more than one second.

Addy's points are crucial for Tennessee to remain in the team competition, but he immediately took up the rear in the 16-man field. He'll not catch Morrison and is in danger of dropping behind Nick Adcock (Mo) and Raven Cepeda (NnIa).

Mateo Sossah of North Carolina won the race in 2:32.64. Others: Adcock 2:39.56, Eaton 2:40.90, Hustedt 2:44.10, Morrison 2:45.05, Cepeda 2:48.76, Barroilhet 2:49.30, Addy 2:56.71.

Final scores show Addy dropping to 5th: Barroilhet 5951, Hustedt 5836, Morrison 5792, Adcock 5776, Addy 5683, Eaton 5676, Cepeda 5657, Derznic 5645.

Women's Pentathlon
After three events, Michigan's Bettie Wade (picked 4th) is currently leading at 2712, a 13-point margin over Charlotte Abrahamsen of Memphis. Arizona State';s Jacquelyn Johnson is another 17 points behind, at 2682. She's the favorite to win the pentathlon, with Minnesota's Liz Roehrig picked 2nd. Roehrig is presently 6th, with 2566.

In the Pent LJ, Wade jumped a pentathlon PR 20-5 on her second effort. Roehrig managed a best of 19-6 on her third jump. Johnson closed out the jumping. She was standing 5th in the LJ as she stood on the runway for her last attempt, then hit her best. Johnson jumped 6.16/20-2.5, to finish 4th in the LJ.

Men's Weight
The big ball was won by favorite Egor Agafonov of Kansas at 74-6.25. Auburn's Jake Dunkleberger was 2nd at 72-11.75, with North Carolina freshman Walter Henning 3rd, at 72-3. Henning beat Purdue soph Jon Pullum on the basis of a better second effort. UCLA, which had a strong showing yesterday, added two points with the 7th-place effort of Boldizsar Kocsor, who threw 70-1.5.

Saturday report #2 will be posted around 15:00 PDT, followed #3 at 16:00 PDT.

After that we'll post after each pair of running events: Mile (4), 800 (5), 400 (6), 60 (7), 3000 (8), 4x400 (9), Team Scores (10)

Walter Dix Update
Florida State head coach Bob Braman had a press conference, part of which dealt with the absence of Walter Dix.

Braman: "He came back from Iowa State really ill. He tested negative for mono. On Wednesday morning he went to the doctor. His bother told me that he got up, collapsed and passed out on Wednesday morning. We left a trainer back with him to take him to the doctor; the doctor said he had strep throat. At that point our goal was to get him here and anyone who knows Walter Dix knows that if he could run he would be here.

"He hasn't been able to hold food down, he's completely swollen in his glands and basically he couldn't go. We kind of accepted it on seeing him Monday and hearing how he was Tuesday that we were pretty much going to have to win this championship without him."

Friday Report #2

(14:45 PDT)

Men’s Shot (collegiate record!)
Ryan Whiting was the fourth thrower in the first flight. He took the lead on his first throw, 66-2.5, and increased his best to 21.12/69-3.5 on his second. On his third throw, Whiting had a foul, touching the top of the board on his follow-through. The ball flew beyond 71 feet. Florida's Beau Burroughs, the only thrower from the contending teams, reached 58-10.75 and sits 5th after the first 8 throwers.

Flight 2 includes Whiting's leading opponent, Russ Winger of Idaho moved into 2nd place with a throw of 66-8.75 in the first round. Zach Lloyd of Arizona, was 4th overall after the first round with a 61-1.5. Winger's second throw of 21.29/69-10.25 moved him ahead of Whiting. Lloyd fouled his second. Lloyd came out the front of the circle on a 65-foot third throw with Whiting and Winger also fouling their thirds. Florida's Burroughs, who was picked for 6th, did not advance to the final three rounds.

With the field cut to nine, Whiting's fourth throw was 66-4.5. Winger also failed to improve, reaching 65-9. Whiting's fifth throw as 67-10.75, with Winger reaching 68-6. On his last throw, Whiting hit a big one, reaching 21.72/71-3.25 for a collegiate and meet record. Officials pulled out the steel tape, to verify the meet and collegiate record. The steel added one cm, making the mark 71-3.5.

The old CR belonged to Hawaii's Terry Albritton, who threw 21.50 in 1977. The old MR was 21.49/70-6.5 by Nebraska's Carl Myerscough in 2003.

Winger's final throw was about 65 feet, but he fouled, coming out of the front of the ring.

Women’s High Jump
No one was eliminated at the first two heights, 1.70 and 1.75. Washington State's Ebba Jungmark and Cal Poly SLO's Sharon Day passed those two heights, then cleared 1.80 on first attempt.

Michigan's Bettie Wade and Arizona State's Jacquelyn Johnson were the only jumpers from contending teams. Wade went out with the bar at 1.80, having cleared 1.75. She failed to score, as did Johnson, who cleared 1.80. Wade had been picked for 7th, Johnson was not projected to score.

I'll leave off for now, with six jumpers remaining as the bar goes to 1.86. Jungmark, Sharon Day and Reese are tied for 1st with clean records. Becky Christiansen, Jasmin Day and Karin Knight are also still in.

report #3 will be posted at approximately 15:30 PDT, halfway through the running event trials.

Friday Report #1

(13:00 PDT)

I've arrived to find that Walter Dix is a scratch in the 200, which has forced a re-draw in the 200 heats. There is also an addition in the men's SP, with Missouri's Nate Englin being added to the field. I won't bother with much more, as you'll have seen the re-draws of the two events by the time you read this.

The Dix scratch obviously affects FSU, but their other two 200m sprinters will move up. Charles Clark was picked for 6th, Michael Ray Garvin was not picked to make the final. Other schools in the team battle with 200m sprinters are Arkansas (J-Mee Samuels, picked not to score), Tennessee with Rubin Williams (picked 2nd) and Evander Wells (picked 3rd), and Florida with Willie Perry (picked as a non-scorer). If Tennessee were to manage a 1-2 tonight, that would be a boost of 4 points for them.

mHeptathlon High Jump
Addy went out early having cleared 1.84/6-0.5, and FSU's Barroilhet has moved into the overall lead in the final event of the first day. This could go a long way to making up for the loss of Dix, as Barroilhet was pegged only for 6th. Barroilhet now leads Addy by 42 points, 3265 to 3223. Florida's Mike Morrison is 5th, just as he is picked to finish.

Women’s Weight
Favored Brittany Riley (in a separate building) wins by almost 11 feet. Riley threw a world-leading 83-1¾ (history's No. 2 throw ever), with Jessica Pressley 2nd at 72-3¾. Riley's World Record is 25.56/83-10¼ from last year.

Arizona State picked up 2 points against the chart, as Pressley's 8 points overcame the 6 that she and Sarah Stevens were projected for. None of the other leading teams had entrants in the event.

report #2 will be posted at approximately 14:00 PDT, at the conclusion of the mSP and wHJ.

Thursday Report #2

(17:15 PDT)

PROJECTED SCORES INDICATE

TIGHT-TIGHT TEAM RACES

The team battles this year appear to be particularly close. The projections are based on the T&FN event formcharts produced by Jack Pfeifer (see front page for links). Quibble with them all you want—I would—but that's what I'll use when reporting points gained and lost by different schools as the competition plays out.

PROJECTED MEN’S SCORES

The men's team battle shows no potential runaway. The top five teams are projecting within three points of each other. With the top-end scoring so low, one would think many more teams have a potential to break into the top five, particularly when the inevitable falls, slips and spills start in tomorrow's prelims.

As it stands, however, there are only two more schools that project for more than 20 points: Florida and Villanova.

Bearing in mind that this is presidential primary season, we want to wait until getting the results of our exit polls before holding up these scores as particularly meaningful!

The top schools are listed, along with their entries. Athletes are listed with their formchart place (or their seed position in parens if they didn't make the top 8 on the chart.)
