Natoya Goule wins another champs 800m

Postby 26mi235 » Tue Jul 09, 2013 12:42 pm

Natoya Goule wins another champs 800m at the CAC games. She also won NCAA Indoors and Outdoors. Here times are great for a collegian but only good on the world stage. Yet, many she has run to win rather than chase fast times. She has now had a long season and it will be tough to put in a set of fast marks now, but next year...

Can someone (Jamaican) fill in a little more on her?

[Also note that ODayne Richards hit the World Championships ‘A’ qualifying standard with his 20.97m win. :!: ]

I am not Jamaican -- just a mere USAnian who is a fan of Natoya Goule. So, a few notes, in congratulation for her winning (yet another) championship this year. Here is her championship record for 2013, at 800m:

SEC Indoor -- 2nd (to Charlene Lipsey)
NCAA Indoor -- 1st
SEC -- 1st
NCAA East -- 1st
NCAA -- 1st
Jamaican Ch -- 1st (SB 1:59.93)
CAC -- 1st.

That's pretty good. :)

Looking at her 2013 on all-athletics.com, (assuming I counted right) she has been in 42 races this year, including indoors & outdoors, 400s & 800s & 1500/miles, & relays, heats & finals. That seems like rather a lot. Assuming she is going to WC, I hope she has something left to run well there.

Goule has been running middle to long distance races from her early teens. She regularly won road races 3-10k in her age class and sometimes overall while attending Manchester High School. She was undefeated at 800m throughout her "Champs" career going 2:03 or 2:04 in her final high school year. She has won 800, 1500 and 3000m races at both Champs and CARIFTA. After leaving Manchester High School she went to South Plains CC (along with Kemoy Campbell) and did well there. Winning the 800m JUCO title twice I believe. PR of 51.52 in 2011 as well

Appreciate the info on Goule, including this reminder of her JUCO championships. I don't follow JUCO very closely, so didn't know about these. Her record is also impressive there:

2011
Indoor: 600 & 800 champion
Outdoor: 400 & 800 champion (& dnf in 5km -- that would have been an interesting triple)

2012
Outdoor: 800 & 1500 champion.

Impressive range.
(Not to mention her participation in relays.)

Her 1:59.93 at the Jamaican trials was a solo effort nearly the whole way. 2nd place was 2:04.30.

Goule did 2:02 at CAC. Simoya Campbell who came second to her at trials in 2:04, again came second to her with 2:03.08 and is still a junior (will turn 20 next year) Campbell actually ran at WJ last year making the semi but failing to report after falling ill. Was expected to break the NJR of 2:02 and challenge Wilson and Judd. Now in college at UTECH under the watchful eyes of Stephen Francis. Lets see how she progresses, very similar in tactic to Goule.

For the last four months, all of Goule's races have been like this. The last time she was in a race in which she was chasing someone was at the SEC Indoor Championships when she came in second to teammate Charlene Lipsey. I'm looking forward to seeing how fast she can go when she's in a race with other sub-2:00 runners and she has the benefit of drafting for part of the race.

^ Good observation. Thanks. I hadn't noticed the "margin of victory" stats for her during this successful year of competition. While she did have some competition indoors (at the Razorback Invite, Lipsey & Piliusina were within 1 second; as noted, Lipsey beat her at SEC Indoors; she beat Roesler by .32 at NCAA Indoors), in her outdoor season she has won every race by at least ~2 seconds or more, with the only exception being her 2:00.06 to 2:00.98 victory over Roesler at NCAA. I think that's the only outdoor competition this season in which anyone has been within a second of Goule at the finish.

Does anyone know if she has competitions planned in Europe in the next few weeks? (I am assuming she's competing at WC, though I haven't seen something that explicitly states this.)

With her middle distance coach taking the head coaching position at Clemson, will Goule remain at LSU?

I don't know how Goule feels, but I would rule out the possibility of Elliot, an LSU alumnus who bleeds purple and gold, trying to poach athletes from LSU.
