Polish Fartlek

Does anyone know from who and when this originated? I can only find a brief description of it at..

a circuit of 1 to 2 km with 8 to 10 training stations and with hard running between the stations)

Fartlek is a Swedish word (not a Polish) which means "speedplay". I can't remember the origins, but I think it was Gösta Holmér who started to use fartlek in his training around 1940.
