Given how things were going in the GIro (poorly for WIggens), I already thought Froome would likely be better than Wiggens.

Yes, but doesn't this also relieve him of shepherding duties before things start to shake out?

No. I think that such is the public perception. But I think that the powers at the team think Froome is as good a rider and a better overall guy for the team; Wiggins, I have heard, can be a very difficult fellow. I would guess that he is more popular in the peloton as well, and that is not an item of tangential import.
