Forum devoted to track & field items of an historical nature.
I just heard that John Thomas had died. He was an inspiration to me as a young high jumper growing up in the late '50s early '60s. I remember seeing his picture in the local newspaper in 1960 after he had set a world record of 7' 3 3/4". The title was "focus on world heights". In 1966 I competed against John in a track and field meet at Cobo Hall in Detroit. He was a quiet man but very gracious to me. I was in awe of him then and am truly saddened by the news of his untimely passing.
