The girls from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly also had a memorable afternoon at Franklin Field. First they won the High School Girls 4x100 Championship of America Relay in 44.96 seconds.

Later in the afternoon, the quartet of Shantae McKinney, Jasmine Lee, Shana Woods and Shalonda Solomon won the Championship of America 4x400 Relay, in a new national high school record time of 3:35.55. The previous mark was 3:35.72 by Wilson, also from Long Beach, Calif., in 2001.

It's tough for our high school kids to beat the Jamaicans at Penn. Nice going Long Beach.

In both races, I hear there were some shaky handoffs. It probably cost LB Poly the national 4x1 record. Shalonda Solomon did especially well as anchor in both relays. She split 51.6 in the 4x4 anchor, which is now the fastest in Penn Relays history. I think they only lose one girl from their relay teams to graduation, so they should be even tougher next year!
