Recent examples Lionel Blair and Adrian Brody.

Adrian Brody's most famous role, which won him an Oscar, was a Jewish pianist!

Anthony Hopkin's most famous role, which won him an Oscar, was a psychopathic, serial killer.

By this reasoning Helen Mirren is really The Queen.

I guess the situation is a little different in the U.S. where many Jewish public figures, primarily politicians, businessmen and journalists, wear their heritege on their sleeves, similar to way Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans do. Of course with all three groups, the surname is often a dead give away. Additionally, the politics over our relationship with Israel often makes it very easy to identify who's Jewish. For example, billionaire casino owner and political sugar daddy Sheldon Adelson doesn't even try to hide the fact that the well-being of Israel is more important to him than that of the U.S.. It's also a dead give away when you find out that a public figure volunteered to serve in the Israeli military when he was young.

On the other hand, based on my observation, Jews in the entertainment industry aren't usually identifiable, and I'm often surprised when I find out that an actor, a comedian or singer/musician is Jewish. I guess most Jewish entertainers aren't very political and many of them don't have Jewish surnames for historical reasons having to do with discrimination.

However, there are exceptions to both rules. Jackie Mason is a comedian who is so overt in his Jewishness that he might as well walk around with the Star of David stamped on his forehead. Then there is former Pennsylvania governor and lifelong politician Ed Rendell who had an interesting exchange with political talk show host Chris Matthews just a couple of years ago that went something like this:

Rendell: Yesterday when I was discussing this with a guy at the synagogue . . . . .

Matthews: Whoa, whoa, did you say synagogue?

Rendell: Yes, I go every week.

Matthews: Governor, you mean to tell me that you're Jewish?

    Rendell: Yes.

Matthews: Governor, that's amazing. I've been knowing you for 40 years and I never had any idea.

Keep in mind that Matthews was born and raised in Philadelphia and Rendell has lived in Philadelphia for his entire adult life and both have spent their entire adult lives immersed in politics.

How often would film makers let a psychopath and killer portray a psychopath and killer, a queen portray a queen? and how often do they let a Jewish portray a Jewish? I think it's much easier and more natural to relate a role's racial identity to its actor/actress, than to relate the role's mental health or royal status.

Before there was Jason Collins, there was Glenn Burke, albeit in a slightly less public way.

Not only the Philly connections but Matthews has been deep in Democrat politics for over 30 years. It is impossible to believe that he did not know Rendell's ethnic/religious background. That interview reads more like a Hollywood script than reality.

What could possibly be Matthews' motive for lying about this? I think its entirely plausible since Rendell is one of the few Jewish politicians of national prominence who never interjects himself into American foreign policy. I certainly was caught off guard by the revelation. Furthermore, I think it's perfectly reasonable to conclude that a mayor who would use his position to honor Louis Farrakhan must be a Gentile.

I dont know anything about motives one way or the other and motives are vapors. I just find it absolutely unbelievable that Matthews, a 30+ year veteran and servant of the Democrat party would not know that Ed Rendell, another 30+ year veteran of Democrat politics was Jewish. If you are right perhaps Ed didnt know that Louis Farrakhan was not Catholic.

As I said earlier, Matthews seemed to be genuinely shocked that he didn't know this about Rendell.

I don't get the Catholic reference. Please elaborate.

If Chris M. didnt know Ed R. was Jewish given the ciricle they have been in for 30 years I will find it plausible that Ed R. thinks Louis Farrakhan is Catholic. Sorry if the satire was too subtle and that double negative didnt help.

Since Farrakhan is one of this nation's most famous religious ministers, I don't think you should give up your day job to go into comedy. If on the other hand, you had said that it's plausible that Rendell didn't know Farrakhan's political party affiliation, the pun might have worked a little better.

First job loss:
I read it too fast and carelessly missed that Jason Collins said he was engaged previously to a woman and then wrote and commented that he was wrong to keep that from readers when, in fact, I was the one who was wrong.”

Anti-semitism in Eastern Europe

Jewish leaders from around the world called on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to do more to stem rising anti-semitism in the country as the premier urged “zero tolerance” for hatred.

About 500 delegates of the World Jewish Congress started three days of meetings yesterday in Budapest, home to central Europe’s largest Jewish population. Anti-semitism, including the rise of the radical Jobbik party, is “dragging the good name of Hungary through the mud,” WJC President Ronald S. Lauder said, with Orban in the audience.

Short of passing draconian hate speech laws, a la Germany and Austria, in a free and open society, I don't think there's much that can be done to stop people from displaying their bigotry.

Meanwhile, in Germany, it looks like the more thing change, the more they stay the same.

A high-profile neo-Nazi trial that focuses on ten mostly racially motivated murders by an underground far-right gang has started in Munich.

Beate Zschaepe, believed to be the last surviving member of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) group, and four others accused of assisting the gang, are being tried.

Zschaepe, 38, is charged with complicity in the murder of eight Turks, a Greek and a policewoman between 2000-2007, as well as two bombings in immigrant areas of Cologne, and 15 bank robberies.

The case has been controversial as for several years the police wrongly blamed the murders on the Turkish mafia.

"With its historical, social and political dimensions the NSU trial is one of the most significant of post-war German history," lawyers for the family of the first victim, flower seller Enver Simsek, said in a statement.

The case has shaken a country that believed it had learned the lessons of its past, and has reopened a debate about whether Germany must do more to tackle the far-right and lingering racist attitudes.

Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull, reporting from outside the court in Munich, said that the case raised bigger questions within German society.

“Beyond the court, the public debate is likely to continue and rage over this issue, ranging from official incompetence to institutional racism and why this neo-Nazi cell was allowed to exist for so long.

“Why the police persisted in the view that the killings were related to gang warfare within immigrant community and why the focus was not on the risk from the far right, these are questions that have thrown such a spotlight on this case."
