Too specialized

It seems to me that kids in all sports, including track and field, are specializing too early in one sport. Just think how many potential distance champs have been lost to soccer since its rise and to kids doing all club sports all the time. If we look at past T&F champs, we see that most were very successful multi-sport athletes.

Track and field has always had fall-out from other sports. If you don't want to be an overbearing parent you let your kids pick their sport. If the kids see you running or whatever they will probably want to emulate you. Since track and field is not seen as one the big money makers in America kids will still see football or even soccer as appealing as they get more TV time.
