closing in 57.89 [400m] from the front and not even being in right there at the end is an unusual occurrence. Of course, hitting 54.35 is even more of a feat for a high school kid.

And a closing half of about 1:58 ain't bad either!!
BTW, do you know what those splits represent?
Is the 2:10 at 800, 880 yards, or 809 meters??
Whatever the case, his splits were about 2:10 and 1:58!!
And so was Montoya's...though just a tad slower!

They are 400m intervals. Thus, is (almost) last 800 was about 1:56.8 (and the last one was probably a little faster as I think we finished fast than he was going at the 800m mark, although over 9.344 meters, it cannot differ by too much).

note there splits: 400, 800, 1200, 1600, mile (the 1+ final split being for 9.344m).

but 1000ths, really?! and with a minute-colon separator, so 65.15 becomes 1:05.144! Yeah, let's go out of our way to confuse the public.

Looks like someone got a new toy. So let's show it off. 1/1000s is pretty idiotic.

I know that Montoya has a 4:01.32 PB.
I'm pretty sure this 4:08.55 is Saarel's PB. Anyone know what his best was prior to this one?

Running 55 last lap in that 2 mile, and now 54 in this mile, tells me Saarel has a sub-4:00 in him.
According to the interview with Saarel on Flotrack, sounds like maybe all 3 of them (Saarel, Montoya, and 1:47.79 guy Arroyo) are going to run Pre.

If it's the elite mile (and not a special HS race), I can see all three going sub-4:00!!
THAT would be a race to remember!!

one of the things that bodes well for Saarel is that he has made steady and sure improvement every year. That plus his wicked finishes promises big things at the next level. He is also winning against some of the top guys. Should be interesting to watch. Good for him

Sort of like Austin Mudd, he seems like he is a racer, not a race-for-time guy.

Pre, far as I know, has never had a HS-only mile (Nike did have one during the OT last year).

A few select super-studs have been invited into the Bowerman mile through the years. Given the quality of that race (and Friday's B-section the last couple), I don't see them rushing to throw the doors open for any 4:08 types at this point. i suspect somebody is carting before horse here.

Montoya (2nd in 1.52,40 PB [old PB 1.52,49]) finally gets a leg up on Saarel (3rd in 1.52,64 PB [old PB 1.52,93]), this time over 800m.

Hadn't run a mile. However, did run a 4.16,22 1.600m PB last season following a 4.17 PB his grade-10 year.
