Mt SAC--Who's Who & What's What

Postby aaronk » Tue Apr 09, 2013 1:54 pm

Earlier, on the 2013 Outdoor Results thread, gktrack offered the link to the entry lists, and a few of the "names" who will compete here.
Here's an event-by-event list of SOME of the "name" entrants in that event.
As with Arcadia, this is surely NOT a comprehensive list!
Feel free to fill in the blanks!!

Men

100---G Rutherford (GB), M Rodgers
200---A Eaton, Nellum
400---Nellum
800---R Martin, Sowinski, Jock, Loxsom
1500---True, Merber, A Mudd
5000---Bruce, Curtis
110H---Osaghae, A Eaton, R Wilson
400H---R Wyatt
HJ---Kynard, J Williams
LJ---G Rutherford (GB)
PV---S Barber
DT---Wruck
JT---Furey
HT---L Charfreitag, K Johnson, Faldemeyer

A couple of listings of interest:

A guy named Alec Baldwin, from Iowa State, is entered in the 800 and 1500.
Didn't know old Alec had given up acting!! :P

And there are five entrants in the 100 for men.....from Hong Kong!!
Since when was HK a sprint power??

Women

100---Jeter, Gardner, L Williams, Lisa Barber
200---V Thomas, Moline, P Francis, Gardner, K Baker, N Hastings
400---Roesler, K Baker, Demus, T Thompson
800---Uceny, S Reid (Can), D Cummins, Willard, Roesler, Demus (!!!)
1500---Felnagle, D Cummins, K Conley, Willard, Friday, Kesselring, B Martinez, C Babcock, M Lawrence
5000---S Hall, A Bizzarri, Spence, Hollander, W Neer, D'Agostino, S Nadel, L VanDalen (NZ), Areson, Hasay, Sisson, C Reilly, M Goethals
SC---Greany, C Anderson, L Anderson, Kipp, A Pappas, M Lawrence
100H---V Thomas, Y Lewis, J Zelinka
400H---Moline, Spence, T Thompson
HJ---Barrett, S Day, L Patterson, Briscoe, Butts
LJ---V Thomas, Fountain, W Gipson
TJ---V Thomas
PV---Stefanidi (Gr), Kayla Caldwell, Gergel, B Buell, A Kubishta
SP---Carter
JT---Borman, H Carson
HT---B Henry, S Hitchon (GB), Cosby

Two sorta interesting entries.

Sheila Reid is running the 800, not the mile or 1500!!
And Lashinda Demus is running both the flat 400 and.....
the 800!!!
Is she beating Jeremy Wariner to the punch by moving up?? :?

ADD:

Remember when the major USA relay meets were scheduled on different weekends, so athletes could "do the circuit"??
This year, we have.....

Kansas---Apr 17-20
Mt SAC---Apr 18-21
Drake---Apr 24-27
Penn---Apr 25-27
Jordan---Apr 28

Need a charter jet and iron legs to do THIS circuit!!

Also, note I offered NO 10K entrants for men or women!
Looks to me like the 10K's this year have relatively weak fields!!

Has Roesler run the 400 at this meet before? If she goes a low-52, that might give her coach something to think about, on the way to the NCAA Regionals.

The distances at Mt SAC can be at one of several venues, although there is usually a pretty good one at Mt SAC proper. However, with the Stanford (II) meet coming up, the distance folks are focusing more on that.

As for LR, her 800 at NCAAs would probably imply that a 51-flat for the 400 might be necessary to be on the radar. She was second at 800 and if she cannot go sub-50 she might not make the top 3. It is possible that 52-low now and something better by Regionals would leave her out of the final. It is a long way from 52-low to 51-flat and to place as high, a 50-low will be necessary, and that differential is like almost 5 seconds in the 800.

Demus is running the 800 m as part of her training regimen. No plans to move up.Although the 800 m was one of her main events as an Age-Grouper.

According to All athletics Demus has already run the 800 three times this year! These are her times: 02.03.2013 Las Vegas UNLV Track Classic 2:11.90
16.03.2013 San Diego Aztec Invitational 2:10.36
06.04.2013 Los Angeles Cal State Invitational 2:09.93

They aren't good marks at all but she won the three races.

She is surely capable of at least 2.05 given her 400 time.

For somebody with a 2:07.49 PR (last year) who is pointing for a speed event 4 months from now, I'd say those three 800s are absolutely great times in terms of where somebody would want to be in building strength. Those surely reflect times achieved under maximal training load, not any kind of race sharpness.

A few new additions... J. Anderson (400H), D. Solomon (M800, who split mid-45 last week), and looks like John Smith is bringing out some of his other athletes as well from across town: B. Okagbare (W100) and J. Richardson (M110H). Also Gil Roberts (M 200/400) representing HSI - anyone know if he's connected to Coach Smith, or who he's working with now?

...and I'm very curious to see how R. Bailey (M100) opens outdoors at Mt. SAC. Judging from this photo a few weeks ago, looks like Bailey is in good hands here with Coach Smith and I believe biomechanic USATF specialist Dr. Ralph Mann. I'm looking for a great season/career from R. Bailey.

Results are coming in.

Jose Pena of Venezuela (If he's the same guy listed in my 2012 Athletics Annual!) won the SC in a world leading time of 8:27.66.

Also, in the fastest section of the women's 1500, Amber Henry beat Josephine Adams, 4:16.07 to 4:16.20.
They were the only runners under 4:20.

Roberts is now training with Smith. Has run a couple 4x1's with Bailey, Rashaad, Richardson and but nothing special - lost 2 weeks ago to TCU at Johnson/JJK meet. Bailey may well have a good season but he looks a little big or heavy to me. Still early but will be curious to see some of our elites open up. Excited to see Ashton Eaton in both the hurdles and the 200 if he ends up doing both. Could press the pure event guys more than they want!

Thanks much for the post valleyrunner re: G. Roberts, I've been wondering about who's coaching him after seeing an ex-Texas Tech guy make his way to the west coast ... Sounds like a great combo to me, Gil's 44.84 (US #6) from last year, add John Smith as his coach this year, and still plenty of racing left in his legs at age 24.

BTW, this is her PR...and ties her for 24th place on the US outdoor list.....with Claudette Groendaal!

Earlier, in a women's collegiate 4X800 relay....a team called "Jane's Elite Racing Team"....DNF'd in that race....and it was the 3rd leg who stopped.

The woman who stopped was named.....Claudette Groenendaal!!

Any relation?
Her daughter....with the same name? Or is there now ANOTHER (unrelated to the former UO star) Claudette Groenendaal out there??
The elder Groenendaal is now 50 (Born in 1963).....or 49. Maybe it's HER!!!

FANTASTIC!!
This makes her 3rd All Time outdoor collegiate!!
And she's now the junior class collegiate record holder, beating Sally Kipyego's 15:15.88.

the other woman on that team are really old also, tania fischer used to race vickie cook in high school, and ran for ucla in the mid 80's, kirsten o hara was a standout at cal in the 80's, and darcy arreola ran for northridge all in the 1980's.

great to see them staying in shape, they should put joan benoit samuelson on their team as benoit-samuelson just ran a world age record of 2:50.29 in mondays boston marathon.

Could not find the 1 Mile results because they did a 1500 instead (outdoors, qualifying times, etc). I did not think that was the case at first because one guy I was looking for was not in the 1500 race (NCAA 3rd placer in the mile, soph Austin Mudd).

Fine performance for Martinez -- PB by slightly more than 2 sec.; also, Conley's 4:10 is a 2 second PB. Good mark for her, as well.

Does anyone have the splits for Brenda Martinez and Abbey D'Agostino?
Per lap for Martinez, and per 1000 for D'Agostino.
Both won by large margins, so I'm wondering if they ran in front the whole way.

BTW, re Claudette Groendaal.......thanks for the info about her.
I went to the link for her group (Jane's Elite)....and became a follower (Will get their newsletter or whatever in my mailbox!)
Fascinating group of women!!
And besides Groendaal, I also remembered O'Hara and Arriola!!

I've got approximate splits for both Martinez and D'Agostino.

Martinez
400---65 or 66
700---1:55
1100--3:00 or 3:01
Last 400--63 or 64.
Last 200--31+.

D'Agostino
1000---3:02
2000---6:08 (3:06)
3000---9:10 (3:02)
4000---12:12 (3:02)
5000---15:11.35 (2:59+)

BTW, Laura Hollander ran her first collegiate track race (Didn't run indoors!) in 15:53.73.
Came in 3rd in her race, but led much of the way.
Splits of 3:09, 3:09, 3:14, 3:13, and 3:08 (approx).

Re: Mt SAC--Who's Who & What's What

She has an interview on FloTrack (for free). She said she had some injuries and needed some rest after XC, so this was her first race since NCAAs and was a good race for getting back in to competition. She will continue to gear up; she has a race next weekend (low key, I think) and then conference and then she will have Regionals. She also said that she thought that 5000 would be her best track distance. Even though she lead for most of the race, she said that she did not try to go out as hard as she was doing during XC.

I saw her running on campus on spring break (we were visiting prospective schools) and she looked like she is getting more strength.

Per lap for Martinez, and per 1000 for D'Agostino.
Both won by large margins, so I'm wondering if they ran in front the whole way

I don't have splits for D'Agostino's race, but video of it (entire) is on Flotrack. Watched it earlier today, and the (very approximate) 1600m splits, iirc, were around 4:54, 4:52, 4:50-ish. At least that's what I remember the commentators saying. I'm sure splits can be sorted out from watching the video, if no other info appears.

She did lead pretty much the entire way -- set the pace from the start - I think there was at most a lap or so in the latter part of the first mile where a couple of the others took the lead briefly. But it was basically D'Agostino's race the entire way. A few (Van Dalen, Spence, Cullen, et al.) hung on a few yards behind her til about 3k, when D'Agostino really pulled away.

I was very impressed w the way D'Agostino looked -- very strong and efficient, especially in her upper body -- arms not crossing over the center at all, everything going forward. I might be remembering wrong (that happens pretty much all the time...) but I recall her not looking that efficient when she was a bit younger, even though she was also running really well then. Assuming the next couple of months go well for her, and there are no misfortunes, I can easily see her running faster than this. And sub-15:00, while a long 12 seconds away, does not seem out of the question this year, based on the way she ran this 15:11. Just my opinion, of course, which has now been revalued to less than 2 cents.

MasterPo, I fully agree with you about D'Agostino.
(I saw the race video too, and her interview, and the Martinez and Hollander race videos.)

But to go sub-15:00 this year, she'll have to either....
A) go for the time herself....meaning take the lead...and RUN!
B) get in an elite runners race (Africans, other 14:30 to 14:50 types!), and be pulled to the time.

As a Dartmouth student, she almost certainly will NOT get that time in her conference, regionals, or the NCAA meet itself......unless she does "A" above......and as a TEAM player, she probably won't do that!!

The USATF Trials race is a possibility....except those races are normally "strategic" (i.e. SLOWER!!).

But she is definitely capable of a sub-15:00 this year.

XC is a big team sport for Dartmouth. But they are 'thin' enough in track that they are not in the running for the top teams, which might give her more freedom. Not impossible that she will run a race like the Oxy High Performance race. Even the second Stanford race, coming up soon, would be feasible, although it is probably too close to this race. However, she does not need a faster time at this point, so going for one before the Trials is not a necessity.

I didn't see this one coming..... I thought Nellum would have been an easy win.... A stone's throw away from sub-45.

Duane Solomon beat Eric Sowinski, 1:46.03 to 1:46.05.
Solomon's splits: 52.8 and 53.2.
Sowinski's splits: 53.3 and 52.7 (negative splits!).
