RIP Johnathan Winters

I was introduced to his zany humor in College (circa 1960), and still use some of his lines. One of my favorites: "Men, I should like to be going with you, but I shall be watching from the Bridge through heavy lenses." From a skit about D-Day(?) landings. Said by the Marine Colonel. Robin Williams was heavily influenced by him.

That's very sad. He was indeed a comic genius.

Indeed - the manic ad-libbing, esp with props, was all JW, THEN RW.

The list of funny people who can slay us with just a look is quite short. JW was my comedic hero, crazy and silly, with a gentle kindness, this troubled genius will be sorely missed and never replaced. RIP Johnathon

Loved him in The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. One of the worst movies of all time, but one of my favorites.

Did a spell in a mental institution f/ a nervous breakdown. Rates up there w/ Pryor & Rickles.
One comedic genius drew a line between people who say things funny (e.g. Benny, Hope, Leno who depended on writers), and people who say funny things.

One of the few human beings who could make Robin Williams crack up beyond recovery.

His ad-libs were deadly to anyone playing opposite him. I remember one sketch wherein Winters was playing opposite a top comic (maybe Williams, maybe Carson; can't remember, Winters' career stretched so far back). Wartime, they were discussing serious strategy during lunch when the comic--who was holding a doughnut--delivered a semi-lengthy spiel about the urgency and near hopelessness of their situation. Winters stood quietly for the whole speech, staring at him, seemingly totally absorbed with the man's words. Then, with an absolutely straight face, gave a quick glance at the doughnut in the comic's hand and asked, "You gonna finish that...?"

The comic lost it completely.

Big Jon was gem.
