They're showing the tape on Boston TV. If you were in front of this retail shop on the ground floor you would have been hit by glass and debris, moving out onto the sidewalk. Speculation that a bomb was left in two business (explo. 15 secs. apart). Two deaths unconfirmed. Twenty serious inj's.
But the context is the event and its place in the US. Terrorists tend to value such things highly as they carry more 'bang' for their buck. I will get my wife's take in a bit, she does security game theory stuff for DHS.
One of my colleagues finished at 4:02; she is OK. Apparently one of the clocks had 4:10 (I cannot make it out in the photos I have seen. 4:01:57 would have had her at the line at 2:23:09, using the data that BAA was producing at the time. Thus, finishing times of about 4:24+ would have been crossing the line at that time.
I think a grain of salt is needed. The Post is also reporting 12 dead, when everyone else is citing 2. I'm listening to the press conference from the Boston police chief at the moment, and there's no mention of a suspect.
There are also reports of a third explosion at the JFK library. Police are treating it as related, but there are other reports saying it is unrelated.
I'm surprised terrorists haven't targeted more sporting events. Large crowds, everybody feels happy and safe, sanctuaries and escape from work, taxes, traffic jams, stress etc. Make sporting venues feel scary and unsafe and the terrorists will have taken something valuable away from us. And note I'm not making any assumptions about who did this, we don't know yet.

Memories of Atlanta!
I don't think the fact that this is a sporting event has any relevance at all. Killing innocent people is sick wherever, this is no worse than eg 9/11 or 7/7
Exactly! Homicide is homicide, regardless of the context. This idea that sporting events are somehow sacred and "apart" from real life is just baffling to me.
On a day like this, I shouldn't have to defend what I say. But at least since Munich, "sporting events" have become a target for people wanting to make political statements through violence.
Munich, Atlanta, and now this.
The Boston Marathon is a FAMILY event....meaning there were children present! And the bombs went off at a time in the race when they could potentially harm the most people.
Yes, I 100% agree that bombings (or violence of ANY kind!) are ALL awful events, and should be totally condemned, no matter the target!
But damn it, a sports event....whether it's a major marathon, the World Series or Super Bowl, or just your local kids soccer game....is a SPORTS event.....not a battlefield for political idealogies to make a statement!!!
This is HORRIFIC, plain and simple!!
And BTW, London and NYC and other major marathon venues have already been in contact with Boston. This could (or WILL) change the whole dynamic of these events!!

Quit while you're somewhat ahead. LIFE is a "family event." There is no good or better occasion for horrors like this--you would prefer a concert in the park, perhaps? The fact that it is a sporting event is completely irrelevant.

Penn is probably safe, although your point about heavy security is going to be true throughout the summer.
The fact that the bombings occurred on Patriot's Day at the site of the country's birth means it is amost certainly political in nature rather than random nutcase.
This is why the Minnesota Mall of America is always under tight security. The symbolism is paramount for the message.
On a corresponding point--as Eugene was just awarded the meet yet again--I was VERY angry at the laxity of security at the 2012 Olympic Trials. The last few days the screening people often didn't seem to give a damn. One time, I asked why backpacks aren't being searched anymore and was told that the viewing machines would indicate any problem. I then asked them if they knew that plastic explosive--lethal levels in even small doses--could appear in common shapes and also not set off a metal detector and a detonator could be concealed in any cell phone (not even being taken from my and my companion's hands).
Of course, the bullsh*t response was then to inform a guard that '"this guy was talking about setting off a bomb." That would have been upsetting, except I had previously told my accompanying friend what I was going to say and accurately predicted the reaction. [As hoped, this gave me a chance to express my concerns to someone who perhaps actually gave a damn.]
**US** Olympic Trials...gosh, think a packed stadium in a city one hour from a coastline could be an international terrorist target--?
Congratulations, Eugene, for getting the Trials once again. But lose the complacency. Today was hopefully your wake-up call. .

One's local Swamp Festival or Blueberry Harvest or Spring Equinox Druid Days marathon may suddenly become more popular.
I know you were being facetious, but maybe that's the best direction to go. Having 1000's of runners.....or 1000's of spectators.....in one place at one time.....presents an inviting target for nutcases!!
How many books have been written, and movies produced, about terrorists (or just plain evil people) targeting a major sporting event.....the World Series, the Super Bowl, or the Boston Marathon? MANY!!
But this is fiction becoming REAL!!
So maybe a "Spring Equinox Druid Days Marathon" is the best solution to this.

I would suspect domestic terrorism more likely. A nutjob like McVeigh.
Also North Korea don't have the skill or means I suspect.
NK spies have more than enough knowledge for this.
And there were multiple explosions in Iraq today as well, with utter devastation. Purely conjecture and speculation as to which person(s) are responsible. Could be a USA-based extremist group for all anyone knows.
Boston PD have discredited this report. No one is in custody.
Also, only 2 deaths are confirmed. I think someone has fat fingers at the post and pressed two keys at once -- and apparently there are no editors at the Post, either.
No editors, no fact-checkers, and precious few journalists, as any semi-literate New Yorker can tell you. It's approximately the same at the National Enquirer or the Weekly World News, with some sports and hysterically reported local news added on.
