Another sports list...flawed already since bambam is not listed under Duke. :)

If it were a HS tournament, wouldn't East St. Louis Lincoln High School win every time? Who's cooler than Miles Davis?

Woodrow Wilson is cool?

Ken Kesey was a good choice.

Agree. For Davidson, I would have picked Steph Curry or Fred Hetzel.

BTW, is Brad Pitt "cool"?

I would say that goes without saying. Can you imagine WW in a zombie movie?

Lincoln was vastly better in roles like that. WW was great in the song-and-dance, Fred Astaire type films, however.

Yeah, really. It ain't me, for sure, but we can certainly do better than that. How about Sean McManus - Jim McKay's son - President of CBS; bunch of leading business people; Elizabeth Dole; even Richard Nixon is better than this guy. Or better yet, Dave Sime.

How about the ole lefthander, Lefty Driesell? I remember when he was coaching at Maryland, a Duke student asked him to sign his bald head. (They were imitating Lefty's bald head by wearing rubber covering over their hair.) Lefty put an "X" on the head and said, "I can't write; I went to Duke."

Perhaps, but his choice of a theme song was not cool for a Gonzaga alum. "When the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day" would have been more appropriate had he gone to Notre Dame or Cal.

I like that our standard comparison for "cool" in this thread is Woodrow Wilson. It makes me feel like I have a chance. :)

(And I would cast my vote for Lou Reed, at least regarding this list.)

I don't know who compiled this asinine list but they lose all credibility in picking Gary Busey over Garth Brooks for Okla State..

As repository of all things Okla State, I had never heard that Busey attended OSU.

lonewolf: Oklahoma State: Edward C. Gallagher. Is anybody from OSU going to claim to be cooler than that guy? I don't think so!

I'm a hoops guy, but I hated it when they changed the name of Gallagher Hall to Gallagher-Iba Arena.

BTW, wikipedia says Mr. Gallagher ran the 100y in 9.8 seconds as a student and was later track coach at OSU.

The wiki article also says the 9.8 was in the Southwest Conference meet, but the SWC didn't begin until 1914 and Gallagher graduated Okla A&M in 1909.

So what did Gallagher win and when did he win it?

I was going to sarcastically write that wiki is never wrong. Of course it is wrong all the time. A college kid told me they can't use wiki as reference for papers, in fact.

Wiki usually has a number of citations, so those are the ones to go to -- more work for the ones that you want to actually cite. Yes, my wife has to flag those citations as inadequate. Of course, it is the papers etc that they do NOT cite that are often the most problematic. For students going that route, the web giveth and the web taketh away.

I remember the first paper I got from a college student (ca. 1995 maybe?) with a footnote citing a website. At the time, I thought it was pretty much like citing a conversation in a pub. After many more conversations in pubs, I am slightly more open to the idea.

Most of these choices have the drop-out rates of the schools' football and basketball players.
Now who was the "coolest" to ever graduate?

Kris Kristofferson, Pomona College (a little more than Will Lear). "gag me with a spoon"'s hint: think Moon One] dad also went there, but only briefly.

[By the way, that reference was to the late Frank Zappa with daughter Moon Unit, and son D...]

Ed Gallagher is indeed a revered icon at Okla A&M/OSU and probably would have been my first thought.. I was reacting to the Busey entertanment genre in selecting Garth Brooks in that he was also an athlete and infinitely more "cool" than Busey.

Gallager was an exceptional track and football athlete but I don't think he ever wrestled.

As to hyphenating Gallagher-Iba arena.. Henry Iba has an enviable legacy in the basketball program he built and maintained for over thirty years... IMO, he deserved the hyphen.

Gallagher Hall was built circa 1937. I was present in 1950-51 when OAMC lost the 4th or 5th game on that court.. Melchior(?) of St Louis U hit a desperation half court shot at the buzzer for a 38-37 (or something like that) victory.. the original 4 " thick, white maple court was preserved during renovation of G-I and is still in use...it has been sanded a few times, don't know how thick it is now but still solid and unblemished.

More on Gallagher Hall.. when I was there ,1949-53 ,it was a 6000+seat steep sided arena. OAMC was a perrenial NCAA wrestling champion and the building was packed for dual wrestling matches... enrollment at the time was about 6000.

When they built a new building over and around old Gallagher, they grand-fathered the original steep first (and only) tier of seats, which would not be pemitted by current building codes, and added two upper tiers at the same angle. Consequently, now fans are about as close as 13,000 people can get to the court...which, when the Cowboys were winning during the Eddie Sutton glory days, no doubt helped it be declared "the rowdiest arena in college" by Dick Vitale, or some broadcaster of that ilk, even though it nevers attains the decibel level of the old building.

The original exterior walls are now interior walls with the OAMC/OSU Athletic Hall of Honors in the space between old and new walls on the west side of the arena, the east, north and south sides being entrance lobbies..
The building forms the east end of Boone Pickens stadium with 2nd and 3rd floor suites and banquet room overlooking the football field.
