NCAA's: Was 2013 better than 2012?

Postby aaronk » Sun Mar 10, 2013 2:15 pm

While following the meet, I thought a lot about whether the 2013 meet topped 2012's, based on better marks and depth.
Following is a by-event analysis. My conclusion at the end.

Men
60......2013--almost tied, but faster race takes it
200.... 2013--Webb's times slightly faster--better depth
400.....2012--Nolan .02 faster in 2013, but slight edge to 2012
800.....2013--easy choice, based on times and depth
1 mile..2013--5 under 4 (2013 USATF proved altitude not a factor)
3000....2012--in a 3K, altitude IS a factor, so slight edge to 2012
5000....2012--better marks overall, and closer race
60H.....2013--Lovett's 7.50 edges 2012's depth
HJ......2013--No contest!!
LJ......2013--Dendy's 27-2 beats 2012's better depth
TJ......2013--two 55's trumps none!
PV......2013--easily! far better marks and depth
SP......2012--easy pick, with 3 over 67
Wt.....2013--slight edge on marks
Hept...2013--3 over 6000, better marks overall
4X400..2013--even with altitude assist, can't beat a MR!
DMR....2013--slightly faster, even though altitude taken into account

Women
60.....2013--pretty even, but 2013's times give it slight edge
200...2013--Duncan 2013 beats Duncan 2012
400...2013--Miller & George make it easy
800...2013--top 3 make it no contest
1 mile.,2013--Coburn's time and a good 2nd place time
3000...2013--Abbey's 2nd race takes it!
5000...2013--better marks overall
60H....2013--Rollins makes it easy
HJ......2013--far deeper field, though Barrett higher in 2012
LJ......2012--Gipson's CR trumps Geubelle's 1st of 2
TJ......2013--easy decision
PV......2013--comparable, but 2013 had 2 over 14-7
SP......2013--almost tied, but Brooks 63 the edge
Wt.....2013--6 marks over 68-6 vs 3 in 2012
Pent...2012--edges 2013 with MR
4X400..2013--top 3 times faster
DMR...2013--much faster field

Even with Nampa's altitude, the men of 2013 win 13 to 4.
The women are even better this year, with a 15 to 2 win!!

Better athletes?
Faster venue?
WC year over OG year a factor??

Certainly the underclass(wo)men did not hurt as they had some pretty good times/marks. Also, Drouin did great in 2011, then got hurt and RS for an entire year and wins here.

Having attended both, I'd vote for this year's meet. Quite a bit more energy in the form of Razorback fans, sightlines that didn't included posts, great HJ and PV battles, several collegiate records and a surprise win for my team. I think all the factors you mention come into play as well as the ones I mentioned above.

I don't know if it's the best ever, but last night, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone? Oregon wins the women's 4x400 and Arkansas sets the CR en route to winning the men's 4x400? On top of that, Oregon puts twice as many people in the women's 60 final as LSU, Texas, Texas A&M and South Carolina COMBINED? This isn't the Oregon and Arkansas that I grew up with, but when you have the nation's top two budgets, I guess anything is possible.

Maybe LSU aren't getting the top recruits because kids FINALLY figured out that the track coach Dennis Shaver ( see link: http://bit.ly/WXoUwB ) is really just Les Miles ( see link: http://bit.ly/ZdD2n9 ) in the off season wearing a bad fake mustache, bwa ha ha

edit: fixed link, before it linked to razervision oops
