¶NCAA--w5000....D'Agostino rips Saina

Postby aaronk » Fri Mar 08, 2013 7:27 pm

It was fairly close......through 4000.
Then 4:30.03 miler Abbey D'Agostino took off....
running her final 1600 in 4:44.36....
and her final kilometer in 2:54.11.

Saina faded to a 2:59 last K.

The first 6 finishers all made my Top 24 performers list for indoors.

D'Agostino is now 4th A-T Indoor Collegiate.
Saina is now 5th A-T.
Tuliamuk-Bolton is now 8th A-T.
Hasay is now 13th A-T.
Matthews is now 17th A-T.
And Pappas just makes my list in 24th place!!

Now THAT is the way to run a Championship Meet distance race!!

Someone who runs 15:33 and closes in 2:59, meaning the 4K split was around 12:34 = 3:08 average pace, executed a substantial pick-up in pace. Saina simply didn't close as fast as D'Agostino did. To say that she "faded" in the 5000, is a rather misplaced term in this context.

"D'Agostino is now 4th A-T Indoor Collegiate."
-----------------------------------------------------

If she did anything special in HS (Greater Boston) I'm unaware of it. What a phenomenal jump forward.

Also, the thread title had me a bit confused. I'm used to seeing 'rip' used to describe critical or disparaging comments, not athletic dominance. I didn't see the race, so I assumed Saina had pushed D'Agostino or something like that, and that Abbey had 'ripped' her in the press...

maybe he meant it like "rips Saina a new one", as in "ripped her a new asshole", as in destroyed a person infinitely in a competition of some sort, etc.

I dunno, I agree it was a weird word to use, but it probably made sense in his head at the time lol

A reasonable conclusion as that was my initial thought when I saw the subject line. However....

LOL... I actually clicked on the thread to see what it was about, because I thought that D'Agostino seemed like a very nice and humble young lady during the post race interviews, and I wondered what might have happened to make her go out of character and cause her to criticize Saina... I'm glad it was just a matter of semantics... :)

My main thought while watching the race was that Saina was going to "go" with 5 laps or so remaining. When she chose not to (or couldn't), it opened the door for D'Agostino. Terrific double!
