Emil's greatness leads us to overlook the fact that Dana was a pretty outstanding athlete herself. Reading the section on her at the back of Bob Phillips 'Za-to-pek! Za-to-pek! Za-to-pek!', she had a fairly impressive record. Olympic gold and silver medals, two European golds and a world record to her credit. She was ranked No.1 only once, in 1955, but from 1949 to 1961 she was never lower than 7th and she remained in the world rankings for a total of 17 years.
She surely counts as one of the greats - in women's javelin - in her own right.

Dana Zátopková (Czech pronunciation: [ˈdana ˈzaːtopkovaː]; née Ingrová [ˈɪŋɡrovaː], born September 19, 1922) is a Czech former javelin thrower. She won the gold medal for javelin in the 1952 Summer Olympics (only an hour after her husband, Emil Zátopek, won the 5000 m), and the silver medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics. She was the European champion in 1954 and 1958. She also set a world record in 1958 (55.73 m) when she was 35, making her the oldest woman to break one in an outdoor athletics event.
