cain entered in 1500

and in 800, but time is not qualified??

why is cain not qualified in the 800 with a 2:03 when someone with a 2:08 is qualified

is there a time frame in which marks need to be reached

Qualifying window: November 17, 2012 - February 24, 2013

and the mile boils down

to sarah brown bowman and mary cain. although trennier moser is in the mix

Isn't it amazing that this 16 year old kid might be FAVORED TO WIN the USATF Championship mile??
Unless people like Uceny, Simpson, Pierce enter, Cain just might be the favorite!!
She's lost to Bowman, but she also beat her!!
I don't think Moser will be a serious factor.

But I can't believe there will be just 3 women in the race!!
(I'm assuming Cain will run the mile!!)

it's at altitude, so run to win

same for ajee wilson, who races channlle price in the 800

uceny, simpson, pierce are thinking moscow in august and who knows what shape they are in now

I agree that at altitude the win will be more important than the time.
I do NOT expect Cain (or anyone!!) to improve their PR in New Mexico!!

But to beat Bowman (Like I said, Cain is now 1-1 vs Bowman in 1 mile races!), Cain will need to either jump first and force Bowman to try to outkick her.......or go IMMEDIATELY with Bowman if she moves first.....and don't depend on her last 200 or 300!!

As for the 800, I see an easy win for Wilson over Price.
But who else is in that race??
Any sub-2:00's??

In a year with no World Champs to qualify for, you can probably expect lots of shallow fields in ABQ next week.

This is not how it used to be. To what shall we attribute this?
The 'peaking' phenomenon - no one willing to come out of training for the outdoor scene?
A lack of an indoor circuit to prepare oneself?
The death of indoors altogether?

Meanwhile, the college indoor scene is chugging along very nicely . . .

Why run a distance race at altitude, when little, including money, is on the line?

How about for the prestigious honor of being called 2013 United States Champion??

If my memory serves me well, that USED to be enough reason to compete in the (then-) AAU Championships......back in those AMATEUR days!!!

Now only greed gets speed!!
(Unless you're an innocent waif, like Mary Cain, who I'm sure does NOT run for the bucks!!)

the mile is a direct to final field so all accepted entrants make the final

can cain acept any winning moneys, or would that violate any rule about posssibly running in college

ajee wilson has 800 too, so i'd assume she could accpt fees she'd be eligible for

I think conor has it right, and I think gh has it right, too. The fact that this championship doesn't lead you to the WIC does matter. Any meet has to be "incentivized" relative to other opportunities. For some up and coming athletes who are seeking opportunities (Mary Cain being a currently high profile example) the national championship is incentive enough. For others with their sights set on outdoors, or other things, having the national championships placed in ABQ, in a year without the WIC coming up, etc. would be sufficient I would think for some/many top athletes to stay home.

Marlow may have it right too, at least in part (not a critique, Marlow -- you gave many possible reasons! :) ). If the "peaking" thing is a way of describing frequency of racing, then in this era, athletes seem to race less often than in the good old days (which I missed, by the way) -- when I read about those days on here, I note how frequently some athletes raced indoors.

As for the "indoor track is dead" suggestion (and its larger relative "all track is dead"), I don't know. I can't argue with the good old days perspective, but this indoor season has seemed to me to be more lively than a few recent years. Maybe not lots of post-collegiate meets, but some well-organized & presented, reasonably well-attended meets, with a lot of outstanding performances. A couple of meets at the Armory, in Boston, in Europe (for real elites), others such as Husky Classic, Tyson Invite, etc. I do think that any athlete with an actual interest in USATF indoors would in fact have had enough meets to prepare (e.g., this is Cain's 5th meet -- how many would an athlete need in January & February?)

I do think ABQ is a problem site, and not just for its altitude. Please don't anyone feel like you have to bother to take the energy to explain why sites are chosen, and the problems, etc. I have read all those threads over the years, and I get it. But I note this anyway -- maybe this should be a minor T&F fantasy contribution: Most of the best post-collegiate indoor meets in the USA are on the east coast (and many of the big collegiate meets -- but I know, not all). So, in the same way that I have to accept that outdoor track is significantly a west coast phenomenon, and thus the USATF meet is likely going to be out there most of the time, and should be out there as a matter of practical reality, indoor track however small its presence is more an east coast phenomenon. Thus, I wish that USATF indoors could be in Boston or at the Armory. I think it would be a better, higher profile meet, even if only marginally so. I think it would have more fans, and perhaps a few more athletes.

Just my 2 cents, and worth about that much. :)

The 800 (Ajee) is not substantially affected by the (relatively modest) altitude of ABQ; the mile more so, but even there it is not a huge deal (not anywhere close to Mexico City, which had a pretty fast 1500; I know the arguments there). I think that, even with the times she has been running, that racing has played a major role in Cain's races. They were designed to be record-fast just to be in the race, but I think a lot of attention was paid to the racing. Cheserek, as good as his race was, was not really racing but running for time.

Perhaps some need a refresher in Math class? (or at least altitudeology!! Sorry to disappoint but the Albuquerque Convention Center where the track is set up is not OVER one mile high. Last I checked one mile is 5280 feet and we miss by about 300 of those. Trying to lower the building some so were are not as high:)

i see where bowman and moser are both in the mile as declared now

hope infeld gets added too

from the iaaf article
http://www.iaaf.org/news/feature/cain-s ... -very-able

Cain, who will conclude her indoor season at the USA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque this coming weekend, got another boost in confidence after her Two Miles race at the Boston Indoor Games, when she and her Oregon Project teammates were put through a post-meet workout by Salazar.

“People were all watching us like, ‘What the heck are they doing?’” Cain said. “Tara (Erdmann) and Treniere (Moser) and I did it together. Afterward, being able to turn in a really good workout and a solid effort, I closed my last 200 of the workout really fast, I was like, ‘Wow! I still have this left.’ That really builds confidence.”

this might explain why she isdoing a potential 800 after the mile

Salazar says he's giving Rupp and Farah two weeks off.....with NO running at all!!......after the indoor season ends.

But he didn't say anything about Cain......so I'm assuming she does NOT get a vacation from running after USATF!!

Unless he'll make that announcement later!!

I'm guessing he'll make that announcement once a venue large enough to hold such a press conference is made available.

so the 3k looks to be a battle between uhl and infeld

leaving the mile to be the nike oregon battle moser, bowman brown cain

800 price and wilson with cain entered butis she really doing the round and the final

With only eight entered and seven declared, I would imagine the 800 heats will be cancelled.

The more pertinent question is whether someone would double back when the Mile and 800 start only 20 minutes apart.

If your prediction comes true......and I think it IS possible!!.....would that be the first time TWO teenagers won national titles in one meet??

Closest I can think of would be the 1965 AAU....when Ryun beat Snell in the 1 mile, and Lindgren came THIS close to beating OG Champ Mills in the 6 mile, both timed in a WR 27:11.6.
Ryun was 18 and Lindgren was 19.

think the caliber of competition in 1960s give them the edge

i still dont know why they entered cain in 800 and mile

i do think the 800 is tough race for cain as i dont know if she has done much 800 specific training yet, mile and 2mile yes, 800 no

There was an interview with Cain where she said she finished a hard workout AFTER one of her record races this year......with a VERY fast 200!!

How fast, I have no idea!!
But something tells me Cain is (or will be) capable of going faster than her "PR" of 55 for 400.
I think she'll eventually at least match Slaney's reported 400 PR of 52-something!

If she can burn a 200 AFTER a record breaking race, I'd say she's ready NOW for a fast 800!!

Only barrier to another record.....or records!!...for her will be Albuquerque's altitude!!
Has she ever raced at altitude before.....anywhere??
Has she ever TRAINED at altitude before??

She trains at altitude every day, Bronxville is 28 meters.

I have no idea if she has trained at high altitude, ie 2400 meters.

Salazar trained athletes have been reported to run workouts after their races for a bit of time now so it's not surprising that Cain would do so as well. This also points out that the body probably recovers...in the short term at least...a lot more quickly than some think.
