Great editorial page, as always, by gh in the new issue. Some excellent examples of why "you might be a track fan if..." I really got a kick out of some of those. I was actually able to check a few of those off. Such as buy a scalped ticket for a track event (Atlanta OGs).

It made me very insecure, because I thought I was one, but was an epic failure at many of the criteria. I can (woefully) claim almost all are true, but but not these:

•if you’ve ever hitchhiked more than 100 miles to see a meet [sounds like a Calif thing, Modesto, Fresno?]
•if you’re willing to share a room with a complete stranger because accommodations
for a meet are hard to find [I don't share rooms . . . EVAH! (cept the wife of course)]
•if you’ve ever paid a scalper for a track ticket [??!! - I had the foresight to buy it WAAAAY early!]
•if you’ve blown off your significant other’s (fill in momentous occasion here)
because, well, that meet just seemed more important [tho I often wish I could have]
•if your personalized license plate has a track & field theme [Navy theme]

I once drove from San Jose CA down to Cerritos to watch the HS state meet and then back the same night, a little over 700 miles round trip. Had to be at work the next day. I think that should at least be medium-core . .

The hitchhiking part, as noted elsewhere, was definitely a 60's, 70's thing. I found it just as convenient as having a car, but without the hassle of owning one. 3 or us, my brother, his roommate at Illinois and I, hitchhiked to the NCAA XC in 1974 in Bloomington and then back to Chicago, the latter trip mostly in the dark and still had no trouble getting rides.

Going a hundred miles to a meet would have been like going across the street back then.
