Abbey has to be the best "local runner" I never heard of in HS. If she ever made a Globe All-scholastic page appearance (CC-IT-Out), I don't remember it.
Obviously she was under the radar and has been outstanding at Dartmouth.

Eh, the only time she's won a big race and been the story was the Penn Relays this year. Each of her cross country and outdoor championships they interviewed Hasay after the race as well.

her 4:34 in january on a flat track was impressive as was the 4:30 last night

there was contact between cain and hasay, as hasay clipped cain's ankle, then dropped straight back, seemed more incidental than anything



stones did mention it though, but when the pace increases, hasay reacts poorly, olympic trials lst year is an example

i think marcus o'sullivan is doing a great job with reid, he just does not have salazar name value

Not to take anything away from Cheserek's excellent run, but, if I am not mistaken, Lindgren's 8:40.0 was run on a much slower,smaller track. Gerry Lindgren was truly an unlikely talent, difficult to explain.

But congradulations to Cheserek for a new record...about 50 years later.

Lindgren ran on an 11 lap wood surface--utterly different from today's great 200m indoor tracks. So, 8:39 is really superb, but it is not intrinsically better than 8:40 flat nearly half a century ago.

Saw some of the ESPN broadcast (which was pretty good). A few comments...

Even knowing the results & how the races played out, still very impressed with Reid's command in the mile. She looked so good in that win!

This thread's title notwithstanding, I did not expect this to be "Cain v Hasay" -- am guessing most others didn't expect this either. Hasay is having a fine indoor season so far, in this year when she has already stated that she's moving up to 10km. She has a 3k PB, and a solid 5k (i.e., not her PB but one of her better times) so far. I did not expect her to run a particularly fast mile at Millrose -- her 4:36 was slower than her best 1500/mile times, but still in the range of her better times. I doubt if she was focusing her training on this race. She has had good success at NCAA indoors doing the 1500/3k double, but I wonder if she will do that this year, or if she will run the 5k. As many have noted through her excellent collegiate career, she probably will flourish more at longer distances.

Was really impressed with Lagat (again). Because he has done it so successfully so many times, I have a tendency to think of him always being a "sit in the pack and kick away" racer (which he often is). But comparing this race with his range of 3k-2 mile-5k races, it was interesting to see him be the leader in the 2nd half, and carry/push the pace on his own. He did something similar in his 7:34 in Karlsruhe earlier this winter -- he didn't lead as early, but he did take over and push the pace in the latter part of that race (i.e., earlier than "kicking at the end").

Also very impressed with Ben Malone in the hs boys mile.

Was there a 3000m split taken on Cheserek's 2-mile?

When Lindgren ran old HSR of 8:40.0 he had a HSR of 8:06.3 en route.

Cheserek posted 3018m split in 8:08.40. At even pace that is 8:05.49 at 3000, better than Lindgren.

There was enough foresight to time Cain at 1500m in mile; was same done for 3000m in 2 miles??

Cheserek's 3k split was 8:05.46.

(And -- all respect to Cheserek for his record performance -- I agree w kuha's comments above, in the description of Lindgren's performance.)

Were you worried at all early on? Was dropping to last place in the cards, in the race plan?
Sheila Reid: It was a good field and it went out quick. I’ve got a good feel on that sort of pace. In the back wasn’t slow, it was just not as fast as the front girls. But you should never bank on people coming back to you, so I did have to start cranking it up a notch.


Were the fractions along the way about what you expected?
SR: I think so. I kind of stopped looking after 800. I just wanted to be real comfortable, no quicker than 2:12 through the half. And then, from there on out, I was just trying to feel good, trying to feel out the other girls and how they were feeling.


Did your move to the front come about where you expected?
SR: I wanted to be at the front with 400—not necessarily leading, but near the front and comfortable to the point that I’d be there for the finish. But I felt too good not to go out in front and I was just trying to keep an eye on the Jumbotron to see where the other girls were.



Could you do that? When the crowd started cheering for Mary Cain [who had moved into second and was briefly gaining], were you able to see where she was?
SR: I knew that someone was coming. I suspected it was her because I made no mistake; the crowd was with Mary today, as they should be. She is a phenomenal athlete. And I was in a similar position, leading that chase pack [behind New Balance Indoor Grand Prix winner Tirunesh Dibaba] in Boston in the two-mile, and she was right on my shoulders again there. I’ve got a pretty good feel for her at this point.

I felt comfortable enough that I was kind of pulling up a bit. I had a few more gears, for sure, if I needed them. It’s certainly a bad habit of mine to be looking around, and it drives my coaches nuts. And it’s a bad habit that I should kick.

So it didn’t bother you very much that there was someone else in the race [Mary Cain] who’d being talked about so much in advance.
SR: Oh God, no. Like I said, Mary Cain, her accomplishments thus far are a lot more impressive than mine. It wasn’t really about how much attention I can get before the race. I just want to run well because I enjoy racing.


And you did a victory lap with her. How’d that happen?
SR: I got a victory, and she got probably a relatively bigger victory than I did. If you compare it, I think her mile was a lot more impressive than mine was today. She deserves every bit of the spotlight that she gets. It was fun to be in the race, for sure.

2. One thing I wonder about re Cain. We all know she declined to move to Portland to train daily (now) under Salazar. And there's indications her family has some means. What I wonder is if she is already doing the altitude tent thing as it is my understanding that is one of the very first mandatories under AS.

I'm a huge beleiver in the benefits of altitude and if she is not getting this benefit already and still running these times ......

they were with the hs boys 4X2, i can tell from the pemmridge boys who were 3rd in the event

norristown won and ato bolden complemented their form to pro sprinters

I think it is Patti Sue Plummer she reminded me of. I had a teammate that made the 1976 Olympic team in high jump and she quit to go to med school, so Canadian track had some bright women.
Zelinka really needs to find a coach. I know she is happy with her time but she could have run much better with a decent start.


Reiser became a Dr. and died in 2008 from a disease where you can't digest food, she was only 52.

She ran 4:09 in the semi, was 7th and DNQ for the final. Had to think she'd be a contender for several Olympics but either injuries or school got her

What is wrong? The Millrose Games were webcast live on Saturday, including the women's mile. They were aired on Sunday night on national television, including the women's mile. And the women's mile is online on USA Track & Field's account.
