What's the deal with lobbying on capitol hill?

I imagine lobbying is a political tradition/reality that is here to stay. But, is it a boon to government function or a boondogle?

Lobbyists convey the concerns of certain categories of constituencies to our elected representatives in the hope of getting favorable treatment. If it's our group doing it, we call it "justice"; if its some other group, it's a "special interest." The problem is that this stuff costs lots of money and all interest groups do not have equal supplies of cash and legal counsel.

Very well said Kuha...and you also pointed out one of the problems with it.Just saying that although it has a place that's legit, it's also problematic...like most political functions.

However, the staff and the Congress know most of the motives and, while the information is biased, it is information that can be used productively. So it is not a completely lost cause.

This makes me think of the quote (Edmond G. (Pat) Brown?): "Money is the mother's milk of politics."

A law should be passed banning ex-solons from being hired by Lobbying firms for at least 3 years post term.
