Heats result, 1960 OT w800m

Postby Mighty Favog » Sat Feb 09, 2013 7:15 pm

A guy you may have heard of named Amby Burfoot is seeking complete results of women's 800m heats at the 1960 Olympic Trials. The official Olympic Trials book, which he has, lists only the top three in each heat.

I told him that while I thought that the data didn't exist if Hymans couldn't find it, I'd ask the experts. Which are y'all. Anyone got anything?

That's the '60 OG -- he's looking for the '60 OT results for this event. (And that's the extent of my help...sorry!) :)

Try for the local newspaper coverage - used to always list agate results.

Meet was in Abilene, Tx. AP appears to have moved only the first three in the heats, and six in the final.

It's likely that we'd have to find primary sources to figure out remaining places.

Not in the 1960 USOC Report - they only give the top 6 from the final

given how irrelevant women's track was viewed in the U.S. at this point in time, my best answer is "don't hold your breath"

A friend of mine who ran heats, didn't qualify for final, is hoping to write about the event. Pretty interesting historically. So if you know anyone who might be able to find full results, please direct them here.

1--Winner played very significant role in U.S. track history after switching to pentathlon and coaching. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Winslow

2--Another non-advancer, Judy Shapiro, won first USA women's national championship in marathon in 1974, Judy Ikenberry by then. Head of very wellknown national road race timing company.

3--Most amazing of all, Stella Walsh competed. She (he?) would have been 49 at the time.

Interesting trivia. Stella Walsh!

Have to agree with gh. Unless you find someone who worked there with some results it seems pretty hopeless. Why was the meet in Texas? Seems like a pretty unlikely place for a women's meet in 1960. Of course, that would have been practically anywhere in the US in 1960, or 1970 for that matter, except perhaps California.

The best (and most recent) source was the July 16, 1960 issue of the Abilene Reporter News, which lists the top-3 in each heat, notes that the first 3 in each heat qualify for the final (correcting what I had in the most recent electrnic edtion of the Trials), and notes that Walsh was 8th (of 9 runners) in her heat. Where the original heat sheets and full results are - are a mystery to me.
