preview for millrose 1 mile

Postby az2004 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 3:56 am

the front page had a brief mention of field for the 1 mile

Cain is expected to line up against a trio of top collegians—Abbey D’Agostino, Jordan Hasay, and Emma Coburn—as well as Reid and Sarah Brown.

reid looks like she is running well, and seems to have a good kick

bowman brown did beat cain in the 4:32 race

the list of college runners are all high quality

this may well be the toughest race cain will face so far, tougher thn the 4:32 mile field

should be a good learning experience for her

Anyone else think she's running too many hard races in a very brief span?

3k 1 mile 2 mile 2 week break, then 1 mile

that;s why i asked whether she would shut down indoor season after the millrose race

i would shut down, but salazar knws much more than i do

. . . about running.
About 16-year-old girl prodigies? From afar? This is looking odd to me.

here's the video of sheila reid 4:30 mile at penn state

sits in the pack for 800 then runs away from it next 800

i think cain will have trouble if reid runs like this in millrose

add in reid has a strong kick

add in bowman and coburn with reid and the other college girls ad it'll be a good learning experience for cain

Having watched her recent 2-mile, I think she's very good at sitting in a fast pack and kicking at the end. If her legs feel fresh (which I'm having a hard time imagining they could) I figure she can go low-4:30s again. 4:29 would be other-worldly. Anything sub-4:40 would still be PHENOMENAL!

reid talks about 2013 and coach switch to marcus ossullivan

cain will be running on 4:32 track, so she's in a tougher field..

the pacers will have sub 4:30

i think reid and bowman will give that a run

i don't know where coburn fitness stands now, but i'd put here 3rd

d'agostino and hasay i'd put sub4:35 range.

i think cain will try to sit with those 2

the point about being fresh is key, what is her kick like. 2 weeks to recover

which is why i agree with shutting down afterwards, recycle training, get 800 training going, which she's always done indoors get 800 races outdoorss, with the goal of 1500 sub 4:05

Well, the only correct answer for me is, "I don't know." But I'll add these thoughts -- I have come to have a very high regard for Salazar as a coach. He is working very well, over long periods of time, with a range of elite athletes who are developing very very well and who seem to arrive at their starting lines ready to go. Cain is different -- but, well, they all are. Salazar doesn't seem to have a one size fits all approach. So -- long statement that means: I trust what he's doing, based on results. Cain seems OK. I will be interested to know what she does after this week. The calendar sort of looks like her indoor season is over after this week, but I suppose she could run something else, e.g., in the high school indoor national in a few weeks.

So, based on how Cain seems, and how Salazar is doing with others, I'm not concerned. Very interested, but not concerned. :)

I have been impressed with Sheila Reid's kick. If you look at the last 50 Yards of the 2 mile race, she finished faster than Cain. I think Reid will win the Millrose Mile.

Below is the ESPN replay link...the race starts around 1:32

i agree with master po on the quality of alberto salazar on long term development

he will get mary cain more fit over time..

he says, he just wants he to compete

and she does, whatever she accomplishes in the future, i trust alberto to get her in good enough shape to compete'

2014 world junior 1500 is what i see the target to be

agree with master po on new balance national hs meet

i'd like her to give the 800 a shot, don't see the merit in running mile or 3k

i agree with exrun too on reid's ncaa double outdoor 1500 and 5k, her kick was keyto both wins

2012, she had a very down year, took a full month off and is back like the 2011 reid

her 4:30 mile and 9:37 2 mile looked sharp and may be the favorite for millrose

moscow should be her key, and canada has a chance for 3 in the 1500

looking at her wikipedia site it says

She now competes for the NY-NJ Track Club

so it sounds like puma might be old news

usatf says

College: Columbia ‘05
Coach: Frank Gagliano
Agent: Thomas Ratcliffe
Sponsor: Puma
Club: New Jersey New York Track Club

so i agree puma is her sponsor

i thought she went to colombia so this is a reasonable new club

Salazar says she's in 4:25 shape...or will be by the 16th.
IF she is, she could WIN this baby!!
How many indoor (or outdoor, for that matter!!) 4:25 miles have there been in recent years??
A 4:25 means she'd pass 1500 in about 4:08, a 3 second improvement on her PR.

Whatever the case, I think she WILL better her indoor bests of the 2nd.
Meaning...she will have set SIX indoor HSR's this year!!
)Don't count the oversize race!!)

i think reid wins, but cain is on her home track and said 4:32 had some mistake

avoid those errors, and the4:30 is my currentlimit

cain needs some 800 based speed work, so 62.5 not 64 can be her kick

how 'long' has Salazar assumed coaching of Cain ... How many times has he been present for a workout. I'm struggling here with just how much AS can justifiably be given credit for her performances now.

The reason I go with a possible 4:25 is NOT because of what she's run THIS season, but what she ran last summer at the WJC!

The 4:11.01.

I know, and understand, how T&FN looks at 1500 to one mile differentials, or 3K to 2 miles.
But I have my own personal theorem on this, and I'm sticking to it.

That is, that the 109.1 meters between a 1500 and mile, or the 218 meters between a 3K and a two mile....is NOT that long a distance that a GREAT runner....and Mary Cain IS NOW a GREAT runner.......a GREAT runner can stay on the SAME PACE she was on prior to the shorter distance, for the remaining 109 or 218!!

In other words, I personally believe that Cain's 4:11.01 was worth a 4:28...not the 4:31 T&FN ascribed to it!!

Ditto with the two mile.
I've seen where she's been ascribed an 8:55 3000 for her 9:38 two mile, NOT the ACTUAL 9:04.51 she was timed at.

She GOT a REAL 3K time!!
She doesn't need an ESTIMATED time!!

So, if I'm correct...and I KNOW most, if not everyone DISagrees with me...if she were to run 4:25, she would be improving her "mile" time by just THREE seconds.....from the "4:28" from last summer....to 4:25.....NOT the SEVEN seconds most would say she'd have to improve!!!

She's a damn STRONG runner!!
I mean her stride, her arm pumping, the power and determination she has.....that only the very best have!!
(It's what propelled Jenny Simpson to her WC win, or Galen Rupp to his Silver in the OG!!)

But, having said all that, I'd be VERY happy if she improved her times (1500 and the mile) by just one-tenth of a seond each!!
That would STILL give her SIX HSR's this indoor season!!

P.S. Keep in mind Cain had a faster final 109.1 meters in her 4:32 than both Bowman and Sifuentes...16.67 as against their 16.80 and 16.90.

In her two mile, she finished faster than Dibaba!!

By your logic, she can run a 8:50 two mile. The proportional distance is 7+% but it takes almost 8% more time -- not because the last 109.344 meters are slower, but because another 109m inthe slower middle are at least as slow as the slowest part of her race. As an economist might put it, the marginal speed is slower than the average speed at essentially all distances from the 100m up (take out the start up and reaction time from the 10 to get the speed) or at least from the 200.

In fact, for men, approximately from the 400 on up to almost 3000m, the marginal speed is 15 miles an hour, in that the next 400 increment is a minute slower, although on the low end the speed is a bit higher and on the high end it is lower. 43, 1:41 (58) 3:42 (60.5), 4:41(?) (60-). This marginal speed is lower despite the fairly high speed of the 400 (20mph).

You actually get a pretty good fit with the function Pace = constant x Log(distance).

And, it is completely irrelevant how fast the finish is. To think that it is, is to fundamentally misunderstand the relationships involved.

there are a couple factors in the 4:32 race. taking the SAT for 4 hours can lead to mental fatigue, which could have been the reason for the tactical error in the race itself. drifting wide and losing contact early with the leaders..

in listening to the john henwood interview, he talks about her 200 meter closing speed

if she can correct the 4:32 mistakes, sit closer to the pacers early, sit directly behind reid and use her kick, i still think reid will win, but cain can get a better time

hence a possible 4:30 in a perfect race

reid from her double ncaa wins of 2 years ago, has show the gear shift needed to win

salazar said 1500/mile is her sweet spot, she's better at it than 3k/2 mile

oddly john henwood said by the time cain is in her early 20s, she might be betterat 5k

salazar will have a few years to build fittness, and if we look at rupp and farah building strength happens over time, so projecting cain eventual distance is tough

base on reid penn state 4:30 she looks very good
and her 9:37 finish

D'Agostino i have yet to see her run in 2013
yet

here's the hep 2012 indoor mile, slow pace, 4:46 mile, suspect millrose will be muuch faster

she went 4:34 mile in hanover did 8:55 3k in seattle nipping hasay

bowman can be in the mix

Abbey D's 4:34 Mile in Hanover was on a flat track...they converted it to a 4:31 for a banked track. I think she will finish somewhere in the middle of the pack.

I still think Sheila Reid is the favorite, but it's within Mary Cain's ability to win it...1500M is her distance and The Armory is her turf.

i saw abby's 8:55 3k in seattle

i think she has a bright future, she put 10 meters on hasay the last lap

my picks now are

1 sheila reid looked good at penn state, and at boston 2 mile
2 sarah bowman did beat cain in the 4:32 race

3 cain, will correct the errors in the 4:32 race
4 d'agostino, agree about the flat track, could see her go 3rd

hasay lack of finishing kick is a problem

coburn, suspect the steeple in moscow is her main concern, so mile mightnot be her primary concern

sifuentes was in the 4:32 and 9:38 races, and in the past has had a good finish

see where ajee wilson will do the open 800 in a good field too

nice 2 kids run millrose to make indoors exciting again

Brennan was the silver medalist for Canada at the 2011 World Youth Championships in both the 200 and 400 meters. It was at the 2011 World meet that she set the Canadian youth record in both the 400 meters (52.12).

Her Canadian junior record in the 200 meters (23.43) came at the 2011 Canadian Youth Championship, where she won both the 200 and 400 meters.

Impressively, she won the bronze medal in the 400 meters in 52.49 at the 2011 Canadian senior national championship against a field of collegians and professionals when she was just 15.

Brennan has won three consecutive Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 400 meter titles for Saint Mary's and added 100 and 200 meter provincial titles in 2010 and 2011.

that;s 2 if healthy, oregon folk who should be world junior eligible

i dont know if oregon as any other world junior eligible team members

it is track town and they do take the sport seriously..\

if they put on a good show, impress the iaaf, perhaps they cn get into a mix for a future world meet, but i wouldnt bet much on that

cain, staying healthy seems a mortal lock to make that team, i'd trust salazar, in his development of farah and rupp, and now centro

Her perfect distance is actually 300m. She hasn't improved on her PB in 2012, she ran in the 52's for the 400 and 24.0x in the 200. I think with enough competition and the right environment/training partners she should be able to improve. This is her progression thus far is:

100 Metres
Performance Wind Place Date
2011 11.77 +1.9 Sudbury 03 JUN
2010 11.88 +1.0 Ottawa 07 AUG
200 Metres
Performance Wind Place Date
2012 24.06 -1.9 St. Catharines 01 JUN
2011 23.43 +1.8 Ottawa 07 AUG

2010 23.84 +0.8 Toronto (TTFC) 30 JUL
400 Metres
Performance Wind Place Date
2012 52.69 Windsor, CAN 26 MAY
2011 52.12 Lille 08 JUL

2010 54.15 Moncton 03 JUL

She will be 18 on March 27.

It may be premature to ask this, and maybe no one should...ever....but, if Mary should improve on her HSR's in the 1500 and one mile at Millrose, and especially if she makes a major breakthrough....say, something under 4:13 and 4:30....then we might well ask whether it would be UNFAIR for Mary Cain to run in any more HS meets, even the championship post-season affairs!!

She is so very far ahead of anyone else in the 1500-2 mile range....and if she ran them, in the 800, 1000, and 5000 events also....that it would be like Dibaba in that Boston 2 mile.

Dibaba's pacers gave up after just 1000. They couldn't handle her pace!!
She lapped a couple of runners.
She was HALF a track ahead of the pack at the finish!!
It was like there were two races....
Dibaba against the clock....and the REAL 2 mile race!!
(In THAT race, Cain finished SECOND!!)

Without Sarah Baxter and some others showing their face indoors so far, it's difficult to say what the rest of the indoor season might bring.

If no one else breaks, say, 4:42 in the one mile, or 10:00 in the two mile, or some equivalent times in the 800-1K or the 5K, I'm beginning to believe it would be unfair for Cain to be allowed to compete in HS track races this year!!

I'm talking outdoors!
It would be like that 2 mile in Boston.....
Cain against the clock.....
and everyone else WAYYY back!!

It would be detrimental both to Mary's progress as a NATIONAL class runner, and to the possible psychological effects of girls being so far behind Cain.....despite being GREAT athletes themselves!!

Think the NY Yankees playing their Class A minor league team!!

But let's wait till we get to outdoors.
Wait to see what happens in the four remaining weeks of the HS indoor season!!

BTW, I'm well aware Cain is NOT racing for her Bronxville team!!
But I'm talking mainly of the post-season NATIONAL HS meets, or ANY high school ONLY races.
I believe Cain would still be eligible to run in the former, if she wanted to.

looks like brennan 2011 200 had a positive wind,

whereas her 2012 time had a negative wind

agree with 300 looking to be her best current distance

she should get stronger as she matures for the 400

i see where florida st got a good female hurdler

NICOLE SETTERINGTON - Ontario, Canada

• 100m Hurdles PR of 13.37 - set in June in OFSAA championships

• Won Athletics Ontario Junior-Senior Championships in 13.98 in July

• Runner-up at Canadian Junior National Championships in July

heres the video of her 13.37

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBzgtkWDOo0

so canada has a couple young talents

also i recall they have a sub 1:48 800 meter run who will go to school in canada

aarok raises valid points about what salazar should do with cain

one model is the ethiopian kid gebresalassie who won world youth 3k, and who has run a good number of diamond league meets

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vwKwSiVmZY here's the 2012 lausanne meet won by cherono in 8:40 for 3k

does salazar want to expose cain to europe

or does he have more modest plans for cain

i think prep for 2014 eugene getinng her 800 time lower that 2:03 is more beneficial

800 and 1000 outdoors would be the route i'd go

dont forget ajee wilson is close by, so local east coast races between cain and wilson are quality for both of the,

then do the diamond league ny mile

follwed by prefontaine 800

and des moines 1500 trials might be the early outdoor schedule

salazar probably knows what he'll do, just not telling us

i'd not pursue 5k, as alberto already says 1500 is her sweet spot now
