- Jamaica is embracing a controversial Super Bowl commercial that depicts a white office worker from the U.S. Midwest feigning the Caribbean island's lilting patois accent to display a cheerful, upbeat outlook. On Wednesday, opposition lawmaker Edmund Bartlett said the television ad "is a perfect illustration of Jamaican culture's global reach and our uncharacteristic penchant to be happy even in challenging situations." Here is the ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H0xPWAtaa8

That's really funny (not that I believe for a second that's how he really talks on a regular basis). Whoever thinks that ad is racist sincerely needs to re-examine his own issues and biases. That's where his objections are really coming from.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
He doesn't live in Jamaica anymore and thus, he doesn't talk like that regularly. I left Jamaica many moons ago and I can(like most Jamaicans who live in the US) switch back and forth between Jamaican talk and "yankee talk" as we please.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adI am glad this white guy put up this video since a lot of non-Jamaicans especially those from North America and Europe do not believe that there are “white Jamaican born” men and women.
If you were to take a look at my HS year book from back in the day, you will see white, Chinese, asian, Indian Jamaicans at my school. Jamaica is made of up of many different ethnic groups with the majority being black however. As the Jamaican motto(on our paper currency) says “Out of many one people” Last edited by jamboy on Fri Feb 01, 2013 7:34 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adI was just in Jamaica 2 weeks ago and they seem to embrace the be happy mentality. Loved the commercial. Not suprised Jamaica would embrace it as well. Lots of happy people there, at least they appear to be with tourists!

One of the funniest comments I have seen posted on the internet about this controvery I AM BLACK AND JAMAICAN AND I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
Hmmmm, where have I heard that before . . . . e pluribus unum . . . ?
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
Que?
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adI used to work with a Chinese guy who had a bit of an accent. I assumed that he was from China, but then I overheard him talking to his brother on the phone in a language that was definitely not Chinese. Turned out he was from Jamaica, with his ancestors arriving there in the 1800s to help build some railroads.
Another former coworker was of Indian descent, but she was from Trinidad. Didn't have much of an accent until she got a little nervous during presentations, which was kind of cute. Very pretty lady.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adOne of my former employees was a Chinese guy born and raised in Tampico, Mexico. He was 2nd generation Mexican. He went to college in San Antonio and stayed in Texas. Spoke fluent Spanish, Chinese, and English. Also, he was a hell of an Interior Mexican cook.
Also, I went to college with an Indian from Kenya. A Dutch girl I dated in college was also born in Kenya and lived there until she was 7 due to her dad's job.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
To be fair, EVERY country has some of the most beautiful women in the world . . .
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
I have noticed that too.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adHere is another real "White Jamaican" spoofing the VW ad. Mad funny

Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adThe "white" actor in the original VW ad is currently in Jamaica courtesy of the Jamaican government.
He is being treated like a king down their for putting Jamaica on the map.The Jamaica Tourist Board wants to use him in an ad.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
You just described my Bajan (Barbadian) wife exactly. In the US, in order to be understood, she speaks a slightly accented English that people hear as accented, but can't quite place. Once she hits Barbados soil, though, it's full-on Bajan. She's like a different person.
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl ad
I'm still wating to see an actual person say it is racist. I saw this supposed controversy reported twice on CNN (Erin Burnett's program and Anderson Cooper's also), and neither time did they show a video or put up an attributed quote of ANYONE saying they thought the ad was racist. I found that odd. And it made me suspicious that this "controversy" concerning this commercial was more than a media concoction, than a legit controversy where any actual people (other than media pot stirrers I'm guessing) had been offended. Btw, Erin Burnett showed video of columinst Charles Blow saying he had some issues with the commercial, but the clip didn't show him calling it racist. Add to that, based on comments I recently heard her make, I know Erin is essentially a self professed idiot on the issue of race anyway. i.e., Extremely ignorant on the topic. These are the things that colored my view of this so called "controversy."
Re: Jamaica embraces controversial Super Bowl adStar of Superbowl VW Jamaican ad does it again. Nice.
